The next iterations of the Porsche 997, the all-wheel-drive 2006 911 Carrera 4 Coupe and 4S Coupe, arrive in the United States this fall starting at $77,895 for the Carrera 4 and $87,895 for the 4S (including a $795 destination charge), Porsche announced.

The new models will be available with two engine options. They will get wide bodywork to fit large rear tires and an enhanced Porsche Stability Management system designed to improve braking. Engines include the 3.6-liter, 325-hp flat six-cylinder in the Carrera 4, and the 3.8-liter, 355-hp flat six in the Carrera 4S.

Porsche officials say the new models? most striking exterior feature is the muscular rear bodywork?almost two inches wider. The new PSM shortens stopping distances by eliminating the air gap between the brake pads and discs, and by pre-filling the brake hydraulic system prior to braking.

Carried over from the previous Carrera 4 model is an all-wheel-drive system that transfers between 5 and 40 percent of the driving force permanently to the front wheels to provide better handling and improved traction on slippery roads.
