Hyundai shuts the door on a convertible Genesis coupe

Hyundai?s upcoming Genesis coupe is intended to rival Ford?s popular Mustang and serve as a low-cost alternative to cars like Infiniti?s G37 coupe, but the Korean automaker says it has no plans to offer an open air version of the Genesis two-door.

Rumors of a Genesis convertible have been circling for several months now, but Miles Johnson, manager of Hyundai?s public relations, says there is no drop top version of the coupe in the works. ?The coupe wasn?t developed to be a convertible from the ground up,? Johnson told Edmunds. ?It was developed as a global car. The wind in your hair doesn?t work in Korea, and there?s not enough volume in the U.S.?

Moreover, Johnson says Hyundai has no current plans to produce any convertible model.

With the Chevrolet Camaro convertible delayed at least a year and the Dodge Challenger not even offering a convertible option, it seems as though Hyundai is really missing out on the chance to truly take on the Ford Mustang. The convertible version of the Mustang doesn?t sell as well as its hard top counterpart, but it?s no slouch either. Add in the fact that the G37 coupe will soon be available with a retractable hard top and Hyundai might be missing out on a big opportunity.

Well damn. It would've made a fine second car in my driveway carport. I won't complain about having a G37 convertible, though.
