Cleaning a headliner

Does anybody know a way to safely clean a headliner?

I had a car detailed the other day (for just $100 + tip ) but they would not touch the headliner - too many bad experiences in the past apparently. A friend of mine, who used to detail cars for a living, confirmed that they also refused to clean them.

What are you trying to clean off of it?

Something I've noticed is that water can be a bad thing to use on it, as it can cause staining.  I peronally have good luck using brake cleaner to get my greasy fingerprints off it.  Make sure to test it in an inconspicuous area first.

Also, I think I would register on one of the detailing forums to find out what they use, like http://www.detailersdomain.com/

No specific stains but it's musty & dingy

Hmm... yeah I'm not sure, I'd try a detailers forum, or see if one of our resident detailer junkies has any ideas.
