X5 & X6 M Versions Official Info

MexicoCityM3

These things are here:

- 555 hp Biturbo 4.4L engine, 500 lb/ft
- 0-60 in 4.5secs
- Trick rear differential (previously available on the X6 only)
- Huge brakes (15.6 inches front, 15.2 rears, four piston calipers in front (first for an M), vented discs).
- Slightly lower (0.4") M suspension
- Faster around the ring than an E46 M3
- 6SP "M-Sport" Automatics w/paddles & launch control (no manual, no SMG, no DCT), will hold gears and not shift on its own.
- 275 fronts on 20" rims, 315 rears on 20" rims

Reported here for your lambasting pleasure (I don't expect a positive reaction). I'd take the X5M over any other thing in this category.

So this is a turbo, automatic, SUV-based M-car. There you have it. Now hell can freeze over.

That is the meanest face I've ever seen on any vehicle.  I adore it.

The X5 M is now extremely high on a long list of vehicles I must own for irrational reasons

I like the 5, so shoot me.

I also prefer the X5. It also makes a lot more sense (if any is possible) than the X6. At least you can carry 5 people w/luggage.

I'd hit it over the Cayenne, even though I think the Porsche might be a bit prettier.

I like the X5.  And now everything that was good about the X6 can be found in the X5.  I say this:  Do get rid of the X6 now.  It has outlived its usefulness.

That, and I'd like to chuck an X5 M around.  The old 4.8is was surprisingly chuckable.  I expect this to be no different.

Think SH-AWD with a BMW RWD bias.

I see.  I just wasn't sure what the "trick" was.

As much as I hate the concept of these vehicles and how much they rely on technology as a crutch against the laws of physics, I still think the system they have that keeps the turbo spun up is pretty awesome.

never understood the uses of most of these SUVs. The X5 i've used seemed nearly pointless. They're large, but not that much in the way of floor space in the boot. Seats 4 ok, but meh. X6 at least looks cool.

Surprised that they gutted the front bumper so much. Looks like hell. The X6M looks like it would be a fun platform for dakar. Give it more suspension travel and and open up the fender wells a bit more for bigger tires.

It's the corporate look. They gave it to the M3 as well. I don't like it either.

Apparently we're only going to get the X6 M, which is rather upsetting. An X5 M would be much nicer, because then I could see though the rear window how many children I'd run over rather than simply listening for the thumps.

Laughs all round had they followed traditional M nomenclature and called them the MX5 and MX6, mind you. Mazdapower!

sportyaccordy

The X5 would look and work a lot better as an actual car.

nickdrinkwater

Sounds like an interesting engine.  They should put it in other BMWs.

omicron

It does point towards a possible direction for future Ms - twin-turbo six for the next M3, twin-turbo V8 for the next M5, CSL as the old M, and so on.

It is very likely this engine or a close variation will power the next M5.

Oh I don't doubt that it's functional, but they have definately picked a theme for their M-front ends and stuck with it. There are a million possible ways they could design a bumper to feed air to the engine.

Is the Red X6 in the pictures above in M spec?

If so that thing has the worst wheel gap ever, it's even more horrible if this is the "lowered" M suspension setup. I expect that kind of wheel gap from GM(in the CTS to be exact, it looked like shit).

Unbelievable. It actually wouldn't look bad if they could properly size the tires/wheels and flush up the gap but instead you get that super shit trifecta of large wheels(that look small), low profile tires and a huge gap. It just screams GM truck with the 20" chrome wheel package. It looks like shit on the chevy, it looks like shit on the cadi and it looks like shit on the BMW.
