Vintage auto related photos

I've been visiting a website for the local university library.   A local paper donated thousands of negatives and the school is scanning them and posting them.  I've posted some at a Volkswagen website....a thread based on old pics with VW's as the subject or in the background.

Here are some (VW related and not) that I thought some here may find interesting.















I'm still trying to decide what kind of van is behind this politician.  It wasn't something I expected to see in NC in 1964.

This one kinda scares me.  It is dated 1966, I was nine years old at the time.  This is the sign that welcomed you to my hometown...not car related, but DAMN!  Well, it was a sign beside the road leading into town...so kinda car related.

Those Mustangs and Camaros look so........average. We today think of them as glamor vehicles, but they look like regular coupes. Also, the Klan welcoming looks really creepy/scary.

I don't recall seeing any Klan signs when I was a kid. But the Confederate Battle flags flew all over the place back then. I never even thought about it back then at all.

That's a 1953-61 Goliath Express.  Goliath was a subsidiary of Borgward, the German manufacturer which folded in 1965.

You're right, what's that doing in North Carolina in 1966?

Before video arcades, you had to settle for car racing...slot cars.  I remember these tracks.  You could build and race your own car.

I didn't notice the "Sip a Zippy" sign above the door of the Zip Mart until now.   I guess ice boxes have always looked the same.

I wondered if anyone would notice the missing hub caps on the Camaros.  I also thought someone would mention the engine in the old hot rod heading to the World's Fair.

My grandfather used to buy and rebuild these old Dauphines.  This wreck is dated August, 1960.



How would you have like to have a miniature Corvette when you were a kid.  This is dated October, 1959.



I actually worked for this man's sons.  This is Billy Brown.  The car is a prize to be given away at his dealership, dated April 1956.



The caption on the photo below described it as Officer Lilley showing a "souped" up Ford truck with dual carburetors that led police on a high speed chase.  Dated Oct, 1955.

And just for kicks....students at local college protesting the Vietnam War.  Only they want to "step up" the bombings to save American lives.  I think this was dated early 1966.

Looks like an old '33 Ford sedan with the hood removed.  The V8 flathead was the hotrodder's engine of choice before the small-block Chevy came along in '55.  It doesn't really look like much has been done to that one to hotrod it.  My brother had a '51 Chevy with the hood removed that he claimed was a hotrod.  It was just a car with the hood removed.
