Driver Carlos Pardo was killed in Puebla, Mexico in this horrific accident last Sunday:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t46o2CtwyaY

He was bumped by driver Jorge Goeters who had been just passed, however it seems that Jorge was not at fault. However, the track may be for having that crazy wall there.

I have driven that track, but not the full oval like NASCAR does. He hit at 200+ km/h directly to the wall.

RIP.

That's one of the more horrific stockcar crashes I've seen.  I'd say they needed more water barrels to protect drivers from that wall.  Looks like they only had maybe 4 (2 rows of 2).  I've seen cars in the American series crash into the end of the pit road wall, but there's always a lot of water barrels to cushion the blow and as a result, I don't think I've ever seen a car get totally destroyed like that in such a crash.

That wall is wrongly positioned or at the very least missing a lot of impact absobing protection. The crash was just after passing the checkered flag so Carlos was awarded the race as his final victory.

Holy shit...that car just...exploded.

Hopefully it went quickly.

On a sidenote, my car was built there.

Why was he trying to pass after the race ended??

He took the checkered flag in the lead, and got his ass tapped after crossing the finish line.

What a stupid place for a wall.

I know but it seemed like the other dude kept creeping up on him even after the race ended.

Dude who died probably let off the gas, and the other one didn't realize it in time. Shits happening at 200 MPH, probably didn't even notice it.

That may be it, but still, that's a costly driver error!

They tap and rub all the time, but the driver may have been celebrating and not had the reactions to correct.

Regardless, that wall is perpendicular to the track, AND he hit an edge part of it. What fucking idiots. I am sorry, but stuff like that wouldn't happen in American NASCAR races.

Unfortunately I have to agree in this case even proud as I am to be Mexican. Drivers get killed everywhere, but in this case that's just poor track design and planning.

My wife was "built" in Puebla too, so I know you got quality there!

My father-in-law worked for a few years at the VW plant. That plant is the driver of that city's economy. IIRC all Jettas and New Beetles for the worldwide market are built there.

For now.  The US market Jetta and Passat will be different and built in US plants, I believe.  But yes, the world production aspect (and actually, your assurances on Mexican-built VW quality) is what led me to the Wolfsburg over the more expensive GTI.

Whoa.

That's racing for you.  Try as they might, driving cars that fast is never going to be 100% safe.  I agree there should have been more crash protection at such an obvious impact point though.
