My dad is finally looking to replace his S600.  I guess that sums this thread up.

So, the question is, what should he buy?

Panamera
XJL (new)
S550
750iL

Oh, and I'll have pictures of my XJ tomorrow.  :ohyeah:

Panamera or Quattroporte.

The rest are too much of liabilities on resale value, sans the Merc.  They hold their value relatively well.

I don't care about all that shit.  I'll be going to college to get an education at a cost to my parents.  I'm not going to fool around.

The Quattroporte will hold its value well? I seriously doubt that.

Anyway, I bet residual values aren't very important when shopping such cars. My choice would be between the XJL (if I need/want the room), or the Panamera,

I'd take either the 750Li or the Panamera.

Interesting that your dad is going to step down from an S600 to potentially an S550. Can you ship the S600 over to Germany so I can have it?

By the way, we have a new member on Germancarzone who has a modified W220 S600 that has some serious balls. He's even got a genuine German license plate sent to him from someone in Stuttgart. Is this legal in the US? I mean driving with a foreign plate!?

And here is the good stuff.

It seems to me i've seen him around before.

My dad's S600 is plenty fast, but I assume that guy has engine mods, along with wider rear tires...

He want's AWD.  I've tired to talk him out of it, but he seems pretty gun-hoe about it (he's especially interested in the Panamera 4S for that reason)

Depends on the state. All states require rear license plates, but only certain states require front plates. As far as I know, it would only be illegal in the states where front plates are required since the foreign plate would be in the place of the front plate.

Otherwise, it's no different than a front plate that has a university logo or something on it.

Let me say this again, since I thought I said it already and I don't care to check.

Your dad wants a large luxury car.
He wants a fast car.
He wants AWD.
I'm assuming he doesn't want an ugly piece of shit.

That leaves the Audi S8

Mmmmm...saw an S8 driving past yesterday (some old woman who lives a few streets away from me I think) what a sexy vehicle.

That being said...and get ready for this, my dad and I both like the way the Panamera looks...

Well, the local Audi and Porsche dealer are one in the same, so taking both cars out for a spin shouldn't be too difficult.

"One and the same".

Both the Porsche dealers near me are Audi/VW/Porsche as well.

I think the only Porsche dealer here is a standalone dealership, which is rare indeed.

Yawn

The S8 is nice.. but isnt the model going to have a change over soon? Resale is horrible though.. Looks like your dad has taste and likes to be different so I will say Panamera.

With cars in this segment, horrible resale is just a matter of degrees.  They all depreciate badly (Jag's the worst though).

All this talk of dealerships has led me to a Google Earth browsing of the Sydney ones. It seems that the better the brand, the more obscure its location.

Take Lamborghini Sydney, for example, and its service centre a few streets away:

A tiny little shopfront, and a marvellously discreet little garage door amidst century-old terrace housing. How....obscure. Further up the same street is Ferrari/Maserati:

Just around the corner is Aston Martin:

and Bentley, too:

Granted, they're about five minutes walk from the Sydney CBD, but it's intriguing how industrial and nondescript they all appear.
