They both have good things and bad things.  Stock for stock, the Mazda is far more fun on a twisty road.

Golf GTI VR6, without a doubt. Debating saying screw the girl and getting one. Everything else felt like and was a little Japanese rattletrap.

From what I hear, it's incredibly front heavy and does not handle well. People say that it's the worst GTI ever.

Because it'll be faster. Meanwhile, AWD gets you traction you don't really need, more weight, less power, and worse gas mileage.

Yea... I actually would prefer something like an A4 w/o AWD. A FWD Audi is kind of blasphemous but a 150HP 3500# AWD car is just damn slow. My mom's RX300 has about that power to weight ratio... it's just not fun at all.

No it isn't. You get to use the significantly superior power to weight ratio of the Neon far more frequently than you get to use the extra traction of the Impreza.

Yeah, a 2WD car with good snow tires is a better winter vehicle than an AWD car with all-seasons.  I've driven both combinations extensively.  AWD helps you accelerate.  It does very little for braking and turning in winter driving.  Tires are where it's at.  All-seasons is a misnomer, IMO.  They are 3-season tires, and a compromise at that.  But doable, I've had all-seasons on a RWD pickup (well, it was 4WD at one point), and several FWD cars, including the Mazda.
