Slow down for traffic and don't shift into a lower gear...

Maybe the AT is doing just that.

Torque converter would prevent stalling in such a scenario; about the only way to stall an A/T car is to shift into reverse at speed.

But I was thinking of the M/T cars.

How slow?  My car probably wouldn't stall at 20mph in 6th, I can't imagine many people are stopping their car without clutching in.

And the article clearly states: "Federal safety officials have opened a probe into two models of Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles after drivers reported that their cars stalled in traffic, sometimes at highway speeds. "

I don't think "stopped" is considered a highway speed.

You should sample the D.C. rush hour.

Not if the lock-up on the converter stuck.

Yeah, I've never been in a traffic jam before.

I'm still having a real hard time believing that it's the floor mat. A real hard time.

Have a hard time no longer, it wasn't the floor mat.

That makes a bit more sense.

All those modified floormats and gas pedals for nothing .  It would be interesting to see the stats on other manufacturers with DBW systems.  I'm sure that Toyota isn't the only one with gremlins.

This shows that someone who knows operate a car can prevent an accident. Shame about all the money they're wasting on pedal redesigns, but that will probably solve a few problems too.

That's pure scary. If other news outlets are paying attention and pass this along, Toyota would be doing some serious suffrage.
