Coupes of the 90's!

Let's pretend it's 1996. You have your heart set on a new coupe for your bachelor(ette!?) life. Which mid 90's coupe do you choose?

Note: I left some cars off the list (Z, Supra, Soarer/SC) because I thought they'd be too expensive and too obvious.



All these cars are strictly coupe or convertible only, and have seating for four.

As indifferent as I am to AWD, I'd have to say either the Subie or the Mitsu 3000GT pique my interest the most (might as well add the Dodge Stealth to the list; I like its styling somewhat better)

If it were 1996 and I didn't know any better, I'd go with the 3000GT without a doubt.

But it's not 1996, and I do know better. Last generation Prelude SH.

Not that I would vote for them, but it appears the Acura Integra and Ford Thunderbird are missing. Actually, I would choose a T-bird over a similarly-powered hardtop Mustang.

Another car that might be missing would be the Acura Legend. Yeah, it's a little pricey, but IIRC, it kind of competed with the Subie, and was priced in between the turbo and NA 3000GT/Stealth.

In 1998, I was a freshman in high school.  At that time, a guy that worked for my dad had a white Mazda MX-6 LS.  Had nice looking 17" wheels and some suspension mods.  It also had a glorious sounding exhaust note (I don't recall what his exhaust setup was).  I lusted after that car so badly.

It's not my first choice today, but that's what I wanted at the time.  So, my vote is for the Mazda.

Well, I've had two Mustangs of that generation and they were bullet proof.  My brother-in-law's brother has a 1998 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 and they make monster power with very little work.  Mustang aftermarket parts are still available in spades, and repairing one if needed is dirt cheap.  The seats are more comfortable then the Firebird's, the interior is nicer, and it's easier to see out of and has a real trunk.  However the seats can be changed in the Firebird and the monster power available from that car is hard to pass up.  1998 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 for me.

I'm not in love with any of these. I'd rather have a 90-91 MX-6 GT that any of these.

But if I hat to take one it be the 92-97 MX-6.  I'll take an LS M-edition in burgundy or the 95-97. My aunt had one and it was a good car. I'd have got it from her when she sold it but it had an auto.
And they are thought of as "girl cars." But when the hell has that stopped me?

Oh, and I'd rather have a 92-94 MX-3 GS then the MX-6.

Wow, for once I can actually say this: I voted with my wallet.

A 1996 Prelude Vtec has the power and handling of the final generation Prelude, but with better exterior and, in particular, interior styling. Other cars under consideration would be the final generation Prelude, the MX-6, the Celica, the Probe, and the Corrado (in that order).
