Germany's Wimmer RS unveils stonking 386 HP Volkswagen GTI

Wimmer RS played around with a VW GTI, and this is the result: nothing too much on the outside and terror under the hood. The exterior, especially for a German tuner, is admirably untouched: just a set of 20-inch Motec Antares wheels, and a lower stance with height-adjustable coilovers.

Up front, though, the revisions take the 211-hp, 2.0-liter TFSI up to 386 hp and 336 ft-lb of torque. The upgraded grunt is courtesy of a new turbo and a thorough rework of the intake and manifold, injection valves, piston rods, fuel pump, and other sundries, along with a new software flash. Top speed is 166 mph, which just might be fast enough to outrun those graphics. Follow the jump for the press release, or have a look at it in the gallery of photos below.

PRESS RELEASE

Understatement Golf GTI with 386 hp ? by Wimmer RS

November 2009 -- Wimmer RS from Solingen has for a long time established its reputation by spectacular car conversions. Nevertheless, strict appropriateness for daily use is also programmed by Wimmer RS. VW Golf VI GTI 2.0 TFSI with its powerful 211 hp engine is a thoroughbred sports car already ex works. After a kind of fitness cure at Wimmer RS tuning forgery, the little sports car will definitely become a weapon.

Now, GTI turbo engine generates full 386 hp with the torque of 455 Nm. This is due to an optimized turbo loader with manifold, the use of a sports CAT, the adaptation of the intake system, the modified fuel pump, innovative injection valves, piston rod and intercooler as well as high grade steel sports exhaust system. Don't forget the proprietary engine electronics and the modification of the TSI-unit. All this provides for the maximum speed of 267 km/h or 166 mph respectively. For safety reasons Solingen has furthermore installed a sports clutch that guarantees better power transmission and very high driving stability.

Concerning the wheels, Wimmer RS gives the choice of 18-, 19- and 20" rims. As top of the pops the Solinger car tuner offers a complete wheel set of Motec ?Antares" in 8x20 inches with Dunlop Sport Maxx GT 235/30 ZR 20 high performance tyres.

Cool, but I bet it torque-steers like a mother fucker.  Convert it to RWD and that would compete with the RWD V8 powered Focus that I want to build when I get a new car.

Pommes-T

Pretty awesome what you can do to the 2.0 VW engine. The topspeed is pretty underwhelming though...

Please don't start with the fucking torque-steer trolling.

It's annoying as hell when everyone jumps on the torque-steer bandwagon. It's a stupid wagon, and a stupid band.

Then it would handle like crap.

The Golf is around 60% front heavy. A RWD car with only 40% over the rear wheels would handle like crap.

Too bad you don't know what you're talking about.  You would have a transmission or transaxle and all the RWD drive components out back to bring the weight distribution in line with any other RWD car.

I can't remember which magazine it was, but they tested the V8 RWD Focus against a Lambo Gallardo and it held it's own.

A RWD compact hatch is dumb.

Unless it's mid-engined.

That was really cool. A RWD Focus sedan would be intresting. Make it an LX. Or a Wagon.

You should see what people have done with a 2.0 Honda engine, without changing the connecting rods.

Just saying that its not really that amazing a power accomplishment considering they've had the engine apart.

The top speed is drag limited. There's so much top speed you can achieve with a hatchback, without putting some really insane power to overcome it.

Do they have a lot of drag?

More so than an exotic sports car.

It's not a linear relationship between drag force and speed either.  You need exponentially more power as speed increases linearly.

Yes. My SHO got up to 100mph Easy.
115mph a little more right foot.
130mph a LOT more right foot.
Had to have a lotta Autobahn and stay on the right foot for a long minute to get 140mph. (only did that twice.)

The only complaint anyone ever had about the Saab 9-3 Viggen. I drove one on the highway once and it was like being in a wrestling match with the car when you had to slow down for a toll booth.

There was a user on CarSPIN who had a Viggen and modded it... he said that stiffening the chassis cured that problem

Champ.

He hasn't posted in the longest time.  I'll shoot him a PM on the Saab forum we both go to and see how he's been.

Well duh! I doubt going beyond that would be beneficial - the power would most likely drop off. It's not a 4 cyl engine where all the power is up top.

That particular engine develops 475 hp at 5600 rpm.  Depending on your heads and cam selections that engine can develop over 500 hp at 6300 rpm.
