I think it's great, but Audi should wait a couple more years when the fuel regulations have tightened more. It's a cool little luxury car, even has the pop up nav which was a good idea given the dash design!

In order for it to pass the American car regulations (also known as the Car and Driver Order, it will need at least a V8 of 5-liters or more in engine capacity, sub-6 second 0-60 times and of course sub-14 seconds quarter mile times. If it doesn't even come close to these figures then they should keep in Europe.

I love it. I'd probably order body-colour pillars, but that's about all I'd change. Fantastic! I love the angry little headlights with one long strip of LEDs rather than lots of silly dots, I love the wheel-at-every-corner stance, and I love the taut, clean lines. It's probably the best, most cohesive application of the Audi shield grille, too.

Like Wimmer said it's both cute and badass. That's exactly what a small luxury car needs to be sold. Especially small cars are bought because of their styling and appeal (Smart, Mini, 500). I can picture both an investment banker behind the steering wheel and his sexy wife.
But I couldn't picture me driving it, because I just don't like cute cars. The new Polo doesn't look cute, but with the right wheels it looks pretty badass and that's pretty much the only compact car I'd like to own right now.

Back to the A1: What I really, really like is that alloy-looking roofline. It gives the car its uniqueness to stand out of the other compact cars.

That's the 1,4l Turbo engine from the Golf. Also available with an extra supercharger and like you said 160hp. I bet they will offer this engine very soon, too!

Pointless car.  Apparently starts at ?14k, for what is essentially a rebadged Polo with no rear legroom and a painted roofline?  And you can bet base models will be stingy as hell when it comes to equipment.   I bet to make it look like the car in the pics with two tone, leather, Nav and alloys, you're looking at ?20k.

I'm sure morons will buy it in their droves because it has four rings on the front.  That's the only merit this car would appear to have.  This thing pales in comparison to the intelligent, spacious, efficient A2.  But then nobody bought that car because it was too clever.

P.S.  OT, but why does every topic you start end with an exclamation mark?  Am I missing something?

You've hit something here.  Why is every damn new car these days styled so that it only looks decent with 18''+ alloys?  WTF is the point of wheels that size on a car of this size?  Not only does it take a ton of space up in accommodating the wheels, but the car rides like shit too.

I agree with you and I don't. The Corsa always looks like shit, the Fiesta looks good, but it's not my thing like most cars in its class. What I also like is the pre-facelift Grande Punto. The rest doesn't even look good with big wheels.
I do agree with what you say about the sense of it. I even prefer the 15 inch winter rims on my dad's A6 to the 17 inch summer rims and that's a big car.

The Primera wasn't bad. With good plastics, and leather appointments, it was a precursor to the Acura TSX.

I don't dislike it, but it's really not doing anything for me.  It's not special enough - despite the fancy details like the grille (which I don't care for) and the silver trim, it's just lacking something....looks ordinary.  I think the Mini succeeds because it just looks different, so singular and purposeful, and has such broad appeal.

I think the A2 was much better.
