I said per his response...jeez, get your tongue out of every cop's asshole for a minute.  Besides, it's Canadian swine, you don't have to defend them.

I have a hard time believing that ( not saying it's not true) but I'ld bet a nickle the magistrate can change the ticket if he wants.  My point was tho that if he admits to 120 then the 123 ticket is extremely reasonable and will likely be upheld.

Meh that's what I was told by a former officer (apparently spent a dozen years in traffic, he must be one sadistic piece o' bacon!).

It's possible that's why I'ld only bet a nickle.   Some like traffic andsome are good at traffic.  Hard to find guys/gals who like traffic and are good at traffic.  When you do you keep them there as long as possible.

I have to agree with cougs and enthusiast convoys always flirting with speeding.

+1

I've been part of these on a few occasions but no more... either you all speed or you all form a rolling road-block since the me-too BS prevents you from ever splitting up for any reason at all.  There's no courtesy or etiquette with most of these groups, sadly.  I'm sure there are exceptions... ChrisV's meet for example seems to have had a more mature atmosphere.

I can't even walk on black ice, how do you expect us to keep control on that which is sometimes something you can't even see

Temps at or near freezing + water on the road = slow down.  It's simple math.

Meh I was on one of these. We were going through a very up and down, blind corners stretch of road. Some of us were doing roughly double the speed limit with nothing but a small shoulder and trees on both sides of the road. Was a really fun, but incredibly stupid few runs.

If you drive faster, you spend less time on the ice = less chance of losing control. Simple math.

Yeah, the first one I did was like that; basically a road race which made me feel a bit ashamed later.  I got caught up in the herd mentality.  The other times were convoys down to meets at Red Rocks, but the last time I went I did it on my own time so that I didn't have to contend with that bullcrap.  Also, nothing screams Douchebag more than showing up to something in a convoy, such as a drive-night thing we did once.  I could read their thoughts: "Oh god, here come the Subaru 'tards."

Looking back at it now, I would definitely still enjoy it as hell but it's simply too dangerous to do that on that stretch of road.

And afterwards on the way home, I got caught up in going a wee bit too fast with another guy on the rural highway. I made the final pass on the guy... and got nailed by the cop (remember that one?).

My response was a bit much, I admit, but the way you dogmatically defend any police action just pisses me off.  It's so fucking clear that they were told that there was going to be an enthusiast meeting and decided to use the courtesy given to them as a way to unjustly target them and fatten the town's wallets.  Then again, I guess there's a reason you don't tell thieves when you're going out of town either...

It doesn't? Why is it that I don't run into everything while going from crash to crash in a cruiser on those icy days then? FYI, there's no magical traction control on a Crown Vic...

Why does it matter anyway? You could be drunk as a skunk, slide on black ice, run someone over, and still get off thanks to your little "brotherhood".

A friend of mine got a ticket for failure to control his vehicle when he was hit by a Nissan Maxima.  She was doing a right-on-red while he was doing a protected left u-turn.  He literally drove over her hood.  It was a completely stock 1999 Silverado.  He fought it, won.

I'd say the difference between crashing and recovering from a slide is based at least partially on vehicle speed, at any rate.

Exactly. When it gets to be about 32 degrees out, ALL traffic should be going no more than 5 mph anywhere, and then only in a straight line so you don't slide off sideways. When cornering, ideally you should just get out and push the car.

Back to the original topic, a quote from the organizer of the event:

.....................................................
2010 Spring Rattler (25th April 2010)

Approx 2 weeks ago I informed the OPP about the cruise as a courtesy because our numbers had reached 30 plus. I informed them of the route, timings and approx numbers and passed on a link to the Rattler Cruise thread on our site. I've always figured that it is better to work with the law rather than against it. I did not receive a reply, nor did I expect one as it was an informative message, not one requesting any input.

On the morning of the event at The Colossus (Highway 400 and 7), those attending from the Toronto area and beyond met to form a convoy up to the cruise start point. All was well and they even got a visit from the OPP who informed them that it should be a nice driving day and that there was only one other patrol on the 400 Northbound. Regardless of this, cruisers are always reminded that they should keep to the speed limits because a line of Minis always attracts attention from everyone.

The Colossus group was joined part way up the 400 by an OPP motorcyclist, who did not seem in any way concerned with the driving behaviour of those in the convoy. No one saw any 'ghost' vehicles or aircraft (the cloud base was low anyway).

When the convoy approached the Memorial Avenue junction with Highway 11 the convoy noticed flashing blue and red lights approaching from the right and naturally assumed that it was emergency vehicles responding to an accident. They were totally surprised to realise that they were the focus of the OPP's attention. Some pulled to the left to allow the emergency vehicles to merge onto the highway; some had to brake hard to avoid hitting the car in front and those in the front, aware of the reality pulled over immediately closely followed by OPP cruisers.

In short it was a badly executed exercise, which could so easily have been avoided. The news cameras were already set up and the OPP seemed to be 'playing to the crowd'. I cannot understand why the offenders were not 'booked' when they reached Webers as the OPP knew that was where they were heading. In all 4 cars were pulled over, three received tickets for 121-123kph in a 90kph limit and one received a warning. They were caught just as the 400 turns into 11, where the limit goes from 100-90kph. One other individual was stopped for operating a radar detector (idiot) and had his equipment confiscated and received a fine.

We saw several OPP cruisers and ghost vehicles on the Rattler (Southwood Road) and Highway 169 to Gravenhurst. There were also a couple of cruisers that pulled into the car park at Muskoka Wharf in Gravenhurst whilst we were having our lunch.

The speeding fines are the responsibility of the individuals, but the whole operation seemed to be planned. Why did the OPP not inform us that they intended to increase their surveillance of the highway that day? I know that when you are driving a cruise you should expect to draw some attention , but this seemed a little excessive. Maybe we should consider requesting an escort on future cruises? (it would be cheaper for the OPP) It makes me second guess the value in informing the OPP of the cruises that I plan in the future.

I would like to see better cooperation between the OPP and ALL motoring clubs. To this end I have contacted the OPP, but have not as yet received a reply.

.......................................................

the bolded part is the part that gets my attention. This wasn't just some random slightly higher enforcement zone, this was staged by the OPP and the media, knowing full well that the caravan was coming through. the caravan was apparently flowing with traffic, and singled out for the media benefit.

Is this a serious quote???

The continued assertion that a charity event and/or LE notification should equate to a free pass WRT traffic enforcement is ridiculous.

Pretty simple: had they not been speeding excessively they would not have been pulled over.

There are some arguments on which to get bent on the overall tack to traffic enforcement but he has no case for this particular run-in.

They called the TV news to be at the speed trap for the rally.

If that happened here, this would start a shitstorm.

Calling the TV news to be there shows that the police had already decided to give the rally members citations before even seeing the rally members drive by. Or why else would they call the TV News to be there and cover it? And then calling child services because a driver may have gone 10-15 mph over the limit? A little gestapo there.
