It doesn't bother me. I consider the Eos to be the spiritual successor to the old Cabrios, and I never drooled over the bitch-basket's black canvas napkin.

I was just hoping they had smoothed over the seams at the folds. No matter. It's still decent top-up, and it's much sharper top-down.

It's the small mainstream convertible in the VW lineup that replaced the previous small mainstream convertible in the VW lineup. It worked its way up to this:

Just because the New Beetle's shape was inspired by the original doesn't mean VW wasn't selling something else in the same slot in the lineup for years. The Eos's price and more luxury focus puts it well apart from the roofless Golfs, slotted above the Beetle > Golf Cabrio > New Beetle market position.

Whatevs, I still consider the Eos to be the spiritual successor to the Golf Cabrio, and I know I'm not the first person to think that. That you don't is just fine, but I don't really understand why you give a shit.

I agree with iffy. The Cabrio was relatively cheap during its day. The Beetle shares more of that cheap and simple character with the Cabrio (as well as the old Beetle), rather than the Eos.

I think it looks fine, but I hate the fact that VW is getting away with slapping on new faces and rears and calling the car a new model, and people are falling for it. This is the same business that put GM in the place it is now.

I don't think anyone here is falling for that. The fact is that there was nothing major wrong with the old one. It was still competitive. It just needed a refresh and some new tech here and there.

I do agree that the "new" marketing pitch is bad.

It's just a different business model. VW seems to heavily invest in new models and then gives it a relatively inexpensive refresh/update after a few years. Toyota's products have shorter life cycles and doesn't invest as heavily in each new model. Each new Toyota product isn't that much different than the one it replaces whereas each new VW product is substantially different.

Good point. I think this is because most modern VW engines, even small ones are optimized for premium fuel, which US consumers might boycott. The US market might not be big enough for VW to justify a new US specific model.

True, but I doubt VW will actually sell very many of the 2.0 models.  The only reason this old nail of an engine still exists is so that Volkswagen can advertise a cheap, stripped-out Jetta with a low base price that nobody will buy.  Like the old Honda Accord DX, it's just there to bring people into the showroom where they will then echew the poverty-spec car they came to see and look at something a normal person might actually want to buy.  Google "Bait and Switch".
