I have to admit it actually doesn't look half bad, but I also have to wonder, how the hell did they even come up with this idea?

Someone at the Nissan design studio must've gotten bored in the middle of sketching an Altima/Maxima convertible, and then thought, "ooh, I have a better idea..."

SVT666

Looks great.  Too bad the Murano's front end looks the way it does though.

This thing starts at $46K.  wowza.

I like the dash of my friends Murano better than this though.

wtf the G37 convertible starts at like $45k

CJ

I think this is WAY cooler than a G37.

Cookie Monster

Ok that's a lot more than I thought.

It reminds of of ultra-lux ultra-huge convertibles from the '30s. I kind of like it, but just call the damn thing a car.

But it sorta crosses over segments. I have it! Let's call it a crossover!

Yeah, I hope it has a lot of standard features at that price. It's still a fairly luxurious vehicle, but it's going way more niche than I expected.

OK, now that I have some size perspective with the driver in his seat, the car looks incredibly silly/stupid.

I'm surprised this is the first of this segment (Wrangler is kinda different). I woulda thought BMW would have an X6 convertible or something ridiculous before Nissan. In any event, we should expect to see a whole bunch of new entries to the segment in the near future.

I agree that it looks unusual, but I don't get all the hate! From the POV of the driver, a convertible is the same regardless of the height of the car.

Dude, it's a Murano. It's gonna be ridiculously ill-proportioned and huge compared to what we're used to. That's the point.

I think it's genius, and I think Nissan will likely sell at least 5,000 next year. I hope that's not considered underperforming.

ok, so what kind of buyer are they looking to capture that would choose this over the 328i or aforementioned G37 convertibles for the same price?

if I wanted a quirky $40k convertible, I'd just get a Saab.

Someone who wants a plusher ride and (I hope) more rear seat room out of their droptop.

But a Tahoe, for example, is considerably more versatile than a 3-series, which is why many buyers make that choice. That advantage doesn't exist with this Murano.

Tave

Hell's bells, I think you hate freedom almost as much as Laconian. :evildude:

Seriously now, no one is going to cross-shop this with a 3-series.

Replace "Tahoe" with "X3" and reanalyze.

well the X3's added height does add somewhat more cargo capacity, no? If anything, it provides easier access to the back seat and cargo area.

I don't hate the fact that this is available. I'm just questioning its purpose. Iffy's probably right, though. Although convertibles in general ride more softly than their hardtop counterparts, practically all of them have tight quarters in the back. That's probably the most appealing aspect of this Murano, aside from the "OMG look how unique" factor

I was drunk so I don't know what I was saying.

I just wonder how many of these Nissan can sell on the shock value alone. I like it but for the price I would just get the G37S or the 335Ci.

I think the design is awesome. It's the only good thing the French have done in the last 100 years.
