Dad looking for a new truck

He told me he was close to getting a 2010 F150 the other day but some how the paper work was screwed up.  Anyways, likely going to go for a 2010 model to save some cash even though I told him he should wait for a 2011 F150.  Not sure if he is thinking about other brands but he seems to like the current F150s the best.

My order of preference for the current crop of full size 1/2 ton pickups is:

1. Ram 1500
2. Ford F-150
3. GMC Sierra 1500

4. Everything else.

The Tacomas did absolutely terribly in the crash tests. It seems like you have the bases covered, perhaps you can sell him on the 2011 based on resale? I think it really would be worth it to get the 2011, but I can't fault him for saving money.

Depends on how long is going to keep it.

Saved my dad $5000-6000 to get a 2010 and given that he'll keep it for 10+ years the resale difference will be insignificant.

Right, from a financial standpoint it may still be better to get the 2010. I'd still want the 2011, but I care about that a whole lot more than most other people.

My dad has actually owned mostly GM vehicles, but since Ford restyled the F150 back in 04 he likes them better it seems.

There are a ton of old (old being 2000s back to the early 70s) Fords around here, a few Chevys, and very few old Dodges. If he's in for the long haul I'd go with a Ford just based on how many different model years I see sticking around out here versus the other makes.

He always has been supportive.  Dirty Jobs (one of the best shows on TV IMO) has stressed the importance of blue collar trades for the last 5 years.

It's the opposite here. Tons of GM fullsizers. A few Fords. And hardly any Dodges. I can remember the last time I saw a Pre-1994 Ram.

Actually talked to a guy today that was having transmission problems with his mid 90s Dodge.  Pretty much anything by Chrysler in the 90s and early 2000s had transmission troubles.
