Hit 210 km/h later, but the shots I took were all blurry and useless.

When I come to Germany, you're taking me for a ride on the autobahn.  :ohyeah:

Don't you have AWD and winter tires?

Riding to LA today and hit 137mph on a long, smooth, downhill straightaway. New personal land speed record. it was nearly at redline so that's about all she's got. Much more stable at 100+ speeds than my Ninja 500.

Yes, but these tires are nearing the end of their usefulness (this will be their last season), and even then it doesn't mean I can drive like a raped ape.

Above about 85, it all feels the same.

It was an ideal location - loooong down grade, you can see about 3 miles ahead, smooth pavement, and no trees hiding moose or anything that can jump out and kill you.

I think Wimmer is the only one to beat my record in this thread. But that's cheating since it's perfectly legal for him to do it.

I think you guys really need a TÜV in America. They'd sound the alarm if your tires were on the verge of death.  :ohyeah:

The fastest I've ever gone was in my father's '89 Mercedes 500SL. The limiter is disabled and according to the speedometer I was doing 260 km/h (163 mph). My father maxed it out at 270 km (169 mph) once.

I've got you both beaten. I've seen 270 (indicated) both in my M3 and in an F599.

It's more fun to break a lower speed limit by a wide margin than drive the same speed when it's legal.

No it's not. The illegality of speeding is the killjoy (mostly because one more speeding ticket this year and my license is suspended). Paying a fucking ticket is no fun. I like driving fast not because it's fun, but because it's....well.....fast. Acceleration is fun. A constant high speed is whatever.

I don't really feel that way, but I don't speed much anyway except when I need to go somewhere fast or I want to go home ASAP. Usually I'll just cruise along at 130 km/h like most Germans do on the Autobahn.  :ohyeah:

People vary.  For me, the risk of getting caught augments the fun of speed.  I do enjoy driving fast over a long distance, not just acceleration.  Getting caught isn't fun, but knowing you took the risk and got away with it is.

Yeah, but is it even enforced?

It gets enforced only above 140kph or so, and the penalties are relatively low so its not a huge deal. No license suspensions just money and not that much.

I've found that regarding actual safety, about twice the posted limit works for me in most situations.

I cruised through Oregon at 70-75 in a 55 yesterday. Top speed was something like 86, but I was in the Explorer so that's plenty fast.

Best story for me was when I was driving very fast (230 kph+) in the M3 while being trailed by a couple of cars I had just passed (Volvo S40 T5 and a vette I think). Around a slight curve to the right there was a federal waiting. I saw him starting up. I figured I just had to outrun the other two guys. So I went flat out at close to 250 for 3 or 4 miles, opened up a lot of space (lost them) and took an exit where there was a small underpass below the highway. I parked there and waited 15 mins. I then resumed my merry way (less fast). After 20 miles, I got to a toll booth and, sure enough, both my "pals" had been stopped. As I drove by I saw a cop pointing at my car and - my guess - saying to a partner "It was a car just like that!". Got away scot free.

Another time I also blasted by a cop on a mountain road at about 160kph and also saw him start up after me. I was driving in the day with lights on on the left lane. So around the next bend - out of the cop's sight - I braked hard, turned off the lights and got on the right lane between two semis. Believe it or not in a minute the cop blasted by me with siren and lights blazing and didn't notice me. Also got away nicely.

Thing about speeding in a car like yours (the 530i) is that 100 mph feels like nothing. The fun of speed is in the resultant "excitement." In my dad's car, 100 mph feels like nothing, so it's not really much fun. Same thing in my car.

I love it!

I got away in a similar way once.  I was doing about 15 mph over the speed limit (40 mph) on a semi-parkway.  I spotted a cop and he started coming after me.  We went around a curve and briefly lost sight of each other.  There was suddenly a traffic light and I made a snap decision to turn left.  I lost myself in the residential streets for a bit and got back on the parkway further up.  It was fun ditching that cop.
