The 118i has a top speed of 210 km/h according to BMW official figures. When my needle is pegged at 235 km/h - the maximum, personally verified speed of my car - the GPS system of my Garmin navigation system says that I'm actually doing 215 km/h.

When I'm doing 210 km/h, the Garmin system says I'm doing 205 km/h. The faster I go, the less accurate the speedometer obviously is. But it's not a big deal since who really cares how accurate the speedometer is when you're driving that fast.

BMWs are known for having especially optimistic speedos.  With a smartphone, it's easy to download a GPS speedometer app and see just how far off it is.

I did that as well, to test the app to make sure it was accurate so that I could see how screwed up my El Camino´s speedometer is. The BMW speedo and app agreed. Maybe I just had a weird BMW.

When you're driving over 200 km/h I don't think it really matters if you're going 210 or 220 km/h - you're driving FAST.

I did that at least today. In a 24 year old BOF car with a live rear axle, 150 HP, plastic wood on the sides and a little girl's bike on the roof. It was pink and had a little bell on it.

A '76 Volare would break apart at that speed, or blow up, assuming you could even get it to that speed, which is doubtful.
