Report: Chevrolet Cruze To Get Diesel Engine As Early As 2013

The Chevrolet Cruze will get a diesel engine as soon as 2013, according to Associated Press sources. With an engine certified to meet U.S. emissions regulations, the Cruze diesel, like diesel models already sold overseas, could see upwards of 50 mpg on the highway.
While General Motors has provided no formal announcement has come from General Motors, two anonymous sources told the news source that the Cruze would soon come with a diesel engine in an effort to fight the ever-more-stringent Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, which could reach between 47 and 62 mpg by 2025 depending on government regulations passed soon...

Should come sooner IMO, but I would think to the average buyer it would overlap with the Eco.

Just to let you know, a base diesel is only 10% more expensive than the equivalent of a top of the line 1.8 auto in England, which is like $20kish here for an LT 1.8. So think $22k for this beast.

You can get an Eco for under $20K.  Will the average consumer really think the oil burner is worth at least another $3K?

I don't actually think it'll be that expensive, considering they have higher taxes across the pond.

i agree and would imagine the diesel model costing more. chevy will need to work hard at marketing the car with diesel engineering and probable benefits. vw has the clientele, but this will be a first for chevrolet (in this size vehicle).

Let's hope it goes better than the last diesel cars GM sold in America.

I'll believe it when I see it.  Still, I hope it's true.  A Cruise diesel makes much more financial sense than the Volt.

Put the diesel in the proposed hatchback model and they'll have a sure-fire winner!

Did I tell you guys my diesel vs. gasoline van experience?

I was in Germany, family was coming to visit. Had the Taurus but just not big enough for 4 adults and carseat for long drives. We rented a van to drive to Venice, Italy, about a 14-16hr drive through mountains. Hertz gave us a Ford Transit 12passenger fan, manual with a diesel. Thing was HUGE, you could put 4-5 bikes standing up behind the backseat. Plus it had a tall roof, you could standup inside.

So the next weekend we were going to Paris. 4hr drive, mostly flat roads. Hertz gave us a Ford Galaxy van. We did some more city driving on that trip. Gasoline engine.

We used the same gas amount of gas money for both trips.

I think what is lost in this discussion is the fact that the diesel is not only the most fuel efficient engine available in the Cruze: it's the most powerful engine available in the Cruze. It's not just a question of crunching numbers and figuring out the break-even point on fuel economy. It's also a question of how much people are willing to pay for better performance. It's not just diesel vs. gasoline, it's like choosing between the 1.8 L or 2.4 L engine in the Corolla, except in this case the more powerful engine is also the more economical.

MaxPower

before I ever considered buying a diesel I'd definitely go through the math first to make sure the price premium on both the car and the fuel made it worthwhile.

93JC

Would you do the same for a 2.2 L, 165 hp gasoline engine?

Actually, that might not be a bad idea. It's not like that many young customers today know much about those old GM diesels.

It's something to consider. I work for a consumer site where the average person who uses it is a little older. It's a different demographic than the Jalopnik set for what I'm doing.

I believe therr is a typo there, as 516 lb-ft @ 4450 RPM would yield 437 HP.
