If the prospect of higherfuel prices has you envisioning a return to a world full of bland econoboxes, there?s hope. Mitsubishi is going all-out in its quest to develop a four-wheel-drive performance electric car that will be on sale as early as 2010. The Lancer Evolution MIEV combines in-wheel motors with lithium-ion battery technology.

The innovative motors use a hollow donut construction, which locates the rotor outside the stator, effectively inverting conventional electric motor design. The setup is less complex, provides a substantial weight savings, and overcomes steering problems associated with wheel-mounted motors, Mitsubishi says.

The Lancer Evolution MIEV, built on a gutted Evo IX chassis, produces 67 hp and 382 lb-ft of torque, and has a curb weight of 3505 pounds. The test car recently finished fourth in the Shikoku Electric Vehicle rally in Japan
