Tie between Gen 1 and Gen 5.5.

I'd love a Gen 1 Boss 429.

EDIT: The added capability of the 5.5 makes it my pick.

Tough to call my favorite.  The current car and the 1st generation are pretty much tied for my favorites.  I'd give the current car the nod simply because it's a far more capable vehicle than the original (and it should be, it's got over 45 years of extra automotive development behind it).

Gen 5.5
Gen 1 (particularly the '67-'70 cars)
Gen 5
Gen 4.5
Gen 4
Gen 3.5
Gen 3
Gen 1.5
Gen 2

Most Mustangs have sucked in most every possible way until the last couple of years. I have only driven a '94 V6, and ridden in various models of the same generation, which had a horrible interior, butt-ugly/tacky exterior , and relatively weak engines that gave it very little value as a muscle car. I also rode in an older Fox-body 5.0, which seemed much more fun to drive, though it still looks too much like a Ford Tempo. I'd say all generations but the current have been on the bland side of butt-ugly. I'll never understand all the fuss about Mustangs, and especially the first gen. I don't see anything special, there. I thought the Falcon was better looking. On the other hand, every V8 Mustang I've heard always sounded wicked sweet. The developments of last few years are the only things that I'd say make the Mustang a great car. Did I say I'm picking the current generation?

I went first gen, specifically, the '69-'70 fastback.

Latest is greatest by far.

But a part of me still wants to buy a 94-98 V6 and swap in a 5.4 + Cobra IRS. I mean for Civic money I'd have a 12 second beast that could somewhat turn.

The current Mustang is a terrific car, but this is the only one on my radar:

You're in luck. I have one for sale.  :tounge:

The current cars are the most capable muscle cars ever built and they look sweet too.  Gen 5.5 is my favourite.

Kind of tough not to love the '68 Bullitt but my favourite has always been the '69-'70 Boss 302.  Although it was rated at 290bhp, same as the Camaro Z28, it produced in the neighbourhood of 360bhp, same as the Camaro Z28.  As well, I also like the '65-'66s almost as much for the sporty, for the time, design that turned so many heads.

Gen. 1 by a mile, but I kinda' like the new Boss as well.

I love the styling of the fastbacks, but let's be honest, they aren't very good.

Besides the 1964.5 original, I'm going to say the most significant new Mustang was the 1979 car. I remember when it was introduced and how significant a leap it was over the old car.

That's like saying the '79 Mustang was a significant leap over the '78 Pinto. lulzzzzzzz

At the risk of sounding like ChrisV, the Mustang II did have a good front suspension and was lightweight... that's all I got. Oh that and we didn't have to live with them long on account of chronic rusting.

Compared to now obviously.  They were good for their day but they really don't corner or accelerate worth a shit compared to today's Stang.  All those old Mustangs did well was look and sound amazing.

The front end was good enough it gets used in lots of retromods.

They also didn't do corners well back then.  The Boss 302 was the only Mustang that was any good at it.

Fair enough but they were sure fun to drive.  Moreso than the average sterile vehicle of today.

5.5 (5 Liter) Hands down! But I'll always have a soft spot for my '89 GT (even tho it was a huge POS) and all of the Fox body Stangs.

Yeah, at legal speeds, you can't beat the old ones for driving entertainment.

My grandpa in law has a red one with the white interior. Pristine. Well as pristine as a Foxbody 5.0 can be.

I have to admit, those were the first Mustangs I ever liked. Bonus points for the awesome 80's rims.
