The Explorer is the top selling SUV in it's class again and after having just driven one, I can honestly say it's pretty good and the magazines that are ripping it are out to lunch.  Yes it is smaller inside than it should be, but otherwise it's pretty good......HOWEVER, I would buy the Durango.  Damn is it ever nice.

Yeah, I was also surprised by the negative reviews. Maybe it's clumsy on a slalom course?

You're my age.  We're getting old.  Plus, now that you're married, your life expectancy has gone way down, since you're more likely to be poisoned by your wife.

You figured that since it was so ugly that it needed a consolation prize?  So many SUVs today are losing that SUV look by going rounded and blobbly, like the CX-9.  But the Explorer tried to stay boxy and also tried to go rounded.  It's disgusting.  Horrible in pictures, worse in person.

Durango.  The Explorer is ugly and nothing special.  IMO it offers nothing over the Durango, all while looking worse, and having less towing ability.

The Explorer was poorly executed, and the GCherokee and Durango have major AT performance issues. Not a fan really of the CX-9 but it wins by default. Outside that however...

Best mid-sizer is the 4Runner.
Best full-sizer is the Sequoia.

The 4Runner might be the ugliest mid sizer of them all.
