WTF? Chevy Eclipse?

SVT666

Chevrolet has unveiled a pair of concept vehicles at the Detroit show aimed directly at the under-30 crowd. The first of these concepts, the TRU 140S, bellies its Cruze underpinnings with styling that blends elegance and aggression in equal measures.

Chevrolet says the low-slung TRU 140S is intended to appear ?confident, exotic, expensive and fast.? Sending power to the front wheels in the TRU 140S is a turbocharged 1.4-liter Ecotec inline-four good for about 150 horsepower and 40 mpg on the highway. Inside, the car features WiFi, smart phone integration with Chevrolet MyLink and a heads-up display. If produced (and that?s a big if), Chevrolet says the car could sticker in the low $20,000 range.

The TRU 140S is the result of a yearlong dialogue between Chevrolet and young consumers across the United States, the company states. Why the focus on younger consumers? U.S. Census data shows that there are 80 million American consumers approaching 30, and this group represents 40 percent of today?s potential car-buying public and a combined $1 trillion in purchasing power.

?Chevrolet has always stood for making the aspirational attainable for all generations? said GM president Mark Reuss. ?These two concepts interpret that vision for a new generation. We?re seeking out our newest customers? opinions, listening to their advice, and engaging them in new ways.?

Am I the only one who thinks this looks just like the Mitsubishi Eclipse?

TurboDan

Definitely looks like the Eclipse. Decent looking car (wish we got to see the rear though).

I can see the Eclipse resemblance, but it's more lean and taut. Like a Chevy TT or RCZ.

Looks hot, though.

Tave

Yeah, definitely a lot like an Eclipse. Not a problem though, the Eclipse always looked good. That's more or less the reason it lasted as long as it did.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

Yeah, I actually love the styling of the current car. The rest sucks, though. And it sucks hard.

Anyone else think the RWD coupe looks absolutely hideous?

The FWD coupe is sexy, but this RWD coupe looks terrible. Looks like they grafted the greenhouse of an HHR onto the body of an R32 Skyline.

I'm all for more upright two-doors (hello Fiat 130, for example), but something's just not right with the execution of this one. A little RWD platform, however, has me all ears.

I can see it from the fenders back. I'm sure this won't be a rolling POS like all modern Mitsubishi's however.

I actually like the RWD Coupe, it reminds me not only a little of the 1 series and Camaro, but of all the RWD Japanese coupes of the '70s I started out driving, from the Mazda RX2 and RX3, to the Corolla SR5 to the first gen Celica and Datsun 510. There's also a bit of BMW 2002 and E30 in there as well.

I'd really like to see it with realistic 16 or 17 inch wheels instead of the show car 20s, however. But, this is a really cool domestic alternative to the dorifto fanboi FR-S and BR-Z, and it comes with turbo power, stock, so it'll be easily chiptuneable.
Like a fine Detroit wine, this vehicle has aged to budgetary perfection...

I'm kinda interested in that RWD coupe.  Any more info on it?

QuoteThe Code 130R is a rear-wheel-drive, four-seat coupe wearing what Chevrolet describes as ?heritage performance?inspired styling? with flared fenders, straight sides, and crossflag emblems. It resembles a shrunken Camaro with some sweet 20-inch matte anodized gold wheels. The Code 130R casts a shadow roughly the same size as and has proportions similar to the BMW 1-series, and it?s slightly larger than the Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S twins. (We?ve heard this concept shares its platform with the Cadillac ATS; the two have identical wheelbase measurements of 109.3 inches.) Power comes from a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with eAssist mild-hybrid technology; the engine itself makes 150 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, a slight bump from the 1.4-liter turbo in other GM products. A six-speed auto would be standard and a six-speed manual offered as an option. We approve

Hmmm interesting.  Hopefully the enormous hype/publicity surrounding the 86/BRZ twins will ignite some interest/excitement in the compact RWD coupe market from the other makes.  I want Nissan the bring back the Silvia.

hmm, isn't the next Camaro supposed to be on the same platform as the ATS? I actually do like that upright RWD coupe thing, but I really hope it doesn't foreshadow what the next Camaro will look like. It would make a very neat Nova, though.

Shame about the mild hybrid shit.

Seems like all the concept cars from the past 3 years have had something like that, even though it never makes it into the production versions. That's what show/concept cars are for; to showcase design AND engineering. The mild hybrid shit will only make it into production when it becomes feasible and cost-effective enough for people to pay money for.

Yes it is.  Could you imagine a 3500lbs 450hp Camaro?

Yeah, it might be as good as the Mustang. :evildude:

The 2015 Mustang is supposed to be on a smaller and lighter platform as well and the current car is a little over 3600 lbs, so I would expect the new one to be about 3400 lbs.

I've heard, shorter, narrower, lighter, and IRS.

I've heard that instead of front and rear axles, they're going to use left and right axles.  Also, the interior will be extremely upgraded, using unicorn horn trim instead of plastic.
