How about placing it in a gyroscopically stabilized, spring dampened box with six degrees of freedom?

Or put the Yaris in a huge paint shaker. Alex was onto something.

Is it based 100% on OBD2 data, or does it have its own sensors?

Makes me want to program an OBD2 emulator...

100% OBDII data, plus a wireless transmitter to the internet.

Laconian

! I'd happily hijack that Internet...

Grab one off a friend's car and hook it up to a demo-derby car for a prank.

Pretty sure demo derby cars don't have an OBD port.

Anything built since 1996 will have an OBD II port.  There's gotta be some some late '90s clunkers finding their way into demo derbys by now?

I'd never let one of these in my car. EZPass, however, makes toll booths so much quicker and easier that I rationalize it. I have one in my car.

Personally, I think they should be illegal.  Anything that requires you to mount on your windshield should be illegal.

My Toll Tag is very high up on my windshield, so it doesn't bug me.

And to add insult to injury, they asked if I was a homeowner (they put "homeowner" by default) and since I said no, my rates went up 10$. '

Could be. I don't know. I just know that I haven't gone fast enough to get any understeer in the dry yet. No need to brake for turns.

If you were driving a full loaded semi instead of a Yaris it would be hard braking.

No way. Nothing built after the '80s is demo derby fodder. Not enough body on frame.

The math on this is screwed up. If I came from a stop from 20MPH, I need three full seconds.

I actually started a thread on "snapshot" a while back - months ago.

I hate the idea.  I think we're monitored too much already.  There's something scary and creepy about it.

I wonder what their criteria could possibly be in determining that ridiculous number of hard stops they came up with.  Are you sure the device isn't defective?

No, I drive a lot of stop-and-go.

Either you jerk the car around a lot, or they have a very expansive definition of a hard stop.

Did you read the OP of what a hard brake is?

Quote from: 2o6 on April 04, 2012, 08:19:54 AM

I suppose, however the device does not have GPS. It has no knowledge of speed limits or anything like that. Basically if I drive smoothly, I get rewarded for this. No hard braking (Progressive bills this as being a drop of over 7mph in one second).

Quote from: MiataJohn on April 04, 2012, 09:24:51 AM

So let's see that means ten seconds and 513 feet, to brake to a standstill from 70 MPH   Good luck with that if you have to drive in any kind of traffic.

If you are going 35, it would take 5 seconds and 128 feet to come to a complete stop.

I can't see that happening in the real world.
