So, I reluctantly installed the "snapshot" device from Progressive in my car. I called customer service and I was assured that my rates cannot go up.

Here's to driving like a grandma for the next six months....

?

Does this mean there's some sort of camera/video system from the insurance in your car that monitors your driving style? Talk about "land of the free"...

It's essentially an electronic recorder that plugs into your OBD II port.  Progressive (the insurance company that's pushing this thing) can see if you drive like a grandma or a maniac.

Here's a TV commercial for it, featuring "Flo" the world's most annoying spokeswoman.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NJl86x4ycU&feature=relmfu

And an even more annoying web-only explanation of what it is and how it works.

So if they can't use this to justify rates going up or perhaps dropping you what is there motivation for going through the time, trouble and expense of providing you with this "monitor" and then looking at the results?

I can just picture them sending out a letter like.  "We regret to inform you that due to your driving style and the places you frequent Progressive will be declining to renew your auto policy for the coming term."

Yeah, the whole thing seems very creepy and big-brotherish to me!

Who the hell would sign up for something like this and why??????

I suppose, however the device does not have GPS. It has no knowledge of speed limits or anything like that. Basically if I drive smoothly, I get rewarded for this. No hard braking (Progressive bills this as being a drop of over 7mph in one second).

What bosh. So they'd rather you run over the cat or crash smoothly into the oncoming drunk driver on your side of the road rather than brake heavily?

So let's see that means ten seconds and 513 feet, to brake to a standstill from 70 MPH   Good luck with that if you have to drive in any kind of traffic.

If you are going 35, it would take 5 seconds and 128 feet to come to a complete stop.

I can't see that happening in the real world.

My insurance rates would fucking skyrocket if I ever plugged one of these things in.

I would understand the appeal if installing it allowed an under-25 driver to prove himself to be a responsible driver, and gave him a reduced rate. This Progressive thing doesn't make any fucking sense.

I'd never let one of these in my car. EZPass, however, makes toll booths so much quicker and easier that I rationalize it. I have one in my car.
