Thinking of going for my Motorcycle license.

My uncle just picked up a 300cc scooter thing that he said I could use for the road test. Its CVT, but its available.

Ill probably never own a bike but it takes almost 2yrs to go through the steps to your full M here so I figure why not get it out of the way just in case...

Or be more inclined to acquire a 600 that may or may not present itself.

Yeah its a crock. Written test gets you 90 days of hwy free license (<100kph). Within that time you have to do a road test, after 60 days IIRC but before the 90. Then you have your M2 which you have to have for a min of 18 months with a bike course, 20 if no course. After that I didn't even catch what you need to do to go full M.

I'm sure I'd enjoy it... As I said I can't really see owning a bike anytime soon, but with the license hurdle out of the way it would make the decision far easier.

Bugger. Sounds almost like a pilot's license.

The graduated licensing program - stealing people's money since 1994.

Imagine my joy since I was 16 in Feb of 95... Just missed it by a little over half a year for my G.... I was however the first in my group of friends that went through that BS to get my full G... Most of my friends put it off and ended up failing at least 1 G test....

Slight exaggeration, but not too far from the truth.  Take the written test (like 15 minutes, not counting waiting in line at the DMV), take the MSF course (2 full days), turn in MSF certificate at DMV to claim license.  Or, if you're confident in your ability, skip the MSF course and just sign up for your road test as soon as you have passed your written test and just pass your road test (which is like 30 minutes tops).  Then it's just a matter of how many days you have to wait before they have an opening for a road test (typically it's at least a week).

Yes, but only because you have to wait in line at the secretary of state.

Visit a Secretary of State office to take the vision and written knowledge tests.
Pass a skills test from a rider skills testing organization OR successfully complete a certified motorcycle safety course.
Present your completion certificate at a Secretary of State office.

Granted, I did the safety course which ran over a couple of weeks: but its not a necessary part of getting the license..

I think in Kentucky you can get away with just having a permit for years, which requires no road test.

Most places require you be accompanied by another licensed rider if you have your permit.  I actually had my permit for a couple of years.  It was only good for a year, so I had to go to the DMV and pay $20 or whatever to have it renewed, but someone could do that pretty indefinitely.  I think after 2 years you have to retake the written test here.

That's just what I was told by a friend of mine. I'm not 100% clear on if it's true or not, but the motorcycle manual doesn't seem to say anything to the contrary.

http://transportation.ky.gov/Driver-Licensing/Documents/Kentucky%20Motorcycle%20Manual.pdf

Only restriction it mentions is that you can't have a passenger.

VTEC_Inside

Talked to a buddy of mine that has begun the bs process.

The course he took supplied the bikes (parking lot thing).

He said I should call about the course and then co-ordinate when I do the written around that. Makes sense to me, but the course is like $400 that I would rather have in my account at the moment.

Will have to have a peak at the website he sent me.

My MSF course is $25.

Though I already knew how to ride, I still took the MSF course. It was worth the $260 they charged for it just in safety techniques. I was assigned a little 250 Virago- it was alright. Then to the state for the motorcycle written, including a retest of the automotive test and that's it.
It was unbelievable how many people failed the automotive test- like 50% the day I was there. Dumbasses.

Cookie Monster

My cousin got his motorcycle license in a weekend. He took the MSF class and the written test and said he passed both and got the license.
