Extreme $300,000 Mini Makes Racing Debut
Date Posted 10-21-2005

POMONA, Calif. ? A one-of-a-kind Mini, modified by California tuners Fireball Tim Racing and Hubie Fuh, makes its performance debut here October 22 at the National Hot Rod Association's (NHRA) Sport Compact World Finals. BMW, which owns the Mini brand, had been describing the race as a "David and Goliath showdown."

The carbon-fiber-bodied Mini Cooper S with John Cooper Works tuning also will be exhibited November 1-4 at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas. It cost an estimated $300,000 to modify.

"This car shows that Mini is not just a 'cute design,'" BMW spokesman Andrew Cutler told Inside Line. "We're not sure, though, if we can claim that it has the most horsepower ever in a Mini. Some tuners tweak the car at enormous levels. But this Mini shows that we have a competent platform for grassroots-level rallying."

The extreme Mini is dressed in "Chili Red" with a white roof, flame graphic, huge rear wing and drag tires. The car made its static debut October 15 at the Hot Import Nights show in Phoenix, where it snagged a "best engineered" award.

What this means to you: This is another way for BMW to show that the little Mini has a lot of guts.

They didnt say anything about changing it to RWD, so I assumed it was FWD.

That's a great local brewery that we have. Do I drink their beer? No.

I assume the drag tires would make circuit racing less ideal.

Run Away

Noooo, it's RWD. They put the drag slicks on the front to give it supernatural cornering grip, and the rears are skinnys to improve it's ability to drift.

How do you know? FWD drag cars are also like that.

I was going to reuse the picture for that instance, but I still don't think he would've gotten it :P
