Porsche has also released the specs, which have improved in comparison with the concept.

4.6 V8 with 560hp, augmented by two electric motors with a combined output of 231hp.

^The position of the exhaust is funky.

Interesting that they are running the prototypes in various racing themes.

For comparison here is the concept:

I imagine the high exit point for the exhaust can really help with rear downforce as it pretty much looks to be aimed at the rear wing.

Looks great, especially with the heritage paintjob.

Electric motors make it hard for me to get excited about this, however.

Meh, not really.  It doesn't put out that much pressure really.  Nothing compared to the aerodynamics at work from cutting through the air.

No shit it'll be quick, but you can't dispute the difference in power delivery. The drama of an ICE is integral to a sports car, IMO.

I remember watching some dude book it from a standstill onto a service road in his Tesla roadster. Yeah, the thing absolutely took off, but it's a different feeling altogether from an ICE (no shit).

Just because something is an an engineering showpiece doesn't necessarily make it exciting. Take the Veyron. Yeah, it's an engineering marvel, but I can't get excited about it. I just don't lust after one.

You know it still has a 560 HP V8....
so the extra 231 HP of electric just ruins that? I call massive bullshit.

+abillion.  A 560 hp v8 revving to 10k RPM is about the most exciting thing I could imagine.  How an extra 231 hp on top of that kills the excitement, I have no idea.  That's just icing on the most ridiculous cake in a long time.

Either it's gonna be really porky, or just semi porky with no electric range.

It's a good design, though I'm kind of getting tired of the same old "super car" shape. I feel the same way about the new McLaren.

The only problem with the electric motors is the added weight. But I'm sure it's still a blast to drive.

68_427

Pretty sure porsche said this will weigh less than the CGT

Not sure, but note that it is legend racing driver Walter R?hrl who is testing the 918 on the N?rburgring.

Funny, this is the first one in a long time that I care about. I've been bored with porsche for years now. I finally get to look at a car that looks nothing like a god damn 911.

Also mufflers are relatively low weight. They can put the chunkier (heavier) stuff lower.

It's fantastic, but I agree in that it's hard to get excited over a car you can never own. That's why pre-owned Boxsters, Caymans and 911s excite me more.

Payman

I'm thinking I want a white 911, and order those Martini decals.

Maybe a little more subtle, like this. I like this.

If it is, I'm surprised porsche is the first company to bring this out. I mean when's the last time Porsche ran a chassis in F1?
"On a given day, a given circumstance, you think you have a limit. And you then go for this limit and you touch this limit, and you think, 'Okay, this is the limit'. And so you touch this limit, something happens and you suddenly can go a little bit further. With your mind power, your determination, your instinct, and the experience as well, you can fly very high." - Ayrton Senna

F1 cars also do this with the exhaust for a bunch of years now...

Well, if they're trying to evoke the 917, they have to add about 1000 more horsepower.

Yeah, I sort of think the 458 Italia perfected the shape, and everyone else is now just trying to copy it without being too blatant.
