BMW is bringing over the new 328i Touring to America but it will be A/T transmission only so it will alienate most enthusiasts. Clearly BMW is playing it safe. They're targeting the typical luxury buyer that wants something sporty and practical and roomy and it must not be a CUV or SUV.

I never said I didn't like wagons.  I love wagons.  The American public doesn't. 


Madman, GM tried it with the CTS and it didn't work.  Mercedes and BMW have been trying it with the E and 5 and they sell in such small numbers.

I still don't get why Americans prefer an SUV over a wagon. I just don't get it.

The way I see it, if I need an SUV, I'll buy an SUV. But here I can get a wagon with optional AWD from most manufacturers (not all, but most). AWD/FWD would be more useful to me than RWD because in the winters I can't venture to certain areas where important clients are with a BMW 1-Series without the risk of getting stuck.

It wasn't until the recent "crossover" craze that SUVs got a ride that could be called "soft" or "isolated".  Drive a 90s Explorer, they ride like a truck.  Rough, stiff...

Yeah, people back then liked sitting up high (and no other reason until car-based ones like RAV4 and CRV came along). Nowadays, most people buy them for the reasons I explained.

No. Most people can't afford a Cayenne. Those that can afford the gas moneys drive something like that. Everyone else drives a mixture of econobox and local makes.   Plus they realize you dont' HAVE to have an SUV or truck to get from point A to point B. it was sure funny seeing little tiny cars pulling camp trailers...

Not saying they don't want SUVs- but the market is drastically different there. $8/gallon gas will do that to you.

BTW Agree with the rest on why people like SUVs. You forgot the "image"- people make fun of minivans so most people that "should" be driving one don't. They get a less capable (city-wise) SUV.

"Tall wagons" (sometimes called mini MPVs), which are often marketed as crossover SUVs in the US because "wagon" is a surefire way to tarnish a car's image, are pretty popular in Europe.  I'm thinking specifically of cars like the C-max, Zafira, or Touran.  And the reasoning is the same reason people in the US like SUVs and crossovers.  They like the taller seating position and ease of ingress/egress.
