Why do you hate the Prius?

Just answer the question. I don't understand the irrational hatred for the Prius.

2o6

I don't think anyone here hates the Prius.

TBR

Don't hate Priuses, hate Prius drivers.

Laconian

I think it's a good car for what it is. It's so popular here that I don't think you can make generalizations as to the buyers' personality types.

Who hates a car???

The Prius simply makes me laugh; if people were truly all up in the business of saving the planet/money/whatever, they'd simply buy a used Corolla or Civic.

Also note the Prius outsells all other hybrids COMBINED; meaning, if Toyota didn't build the Prius hybrids would not exist. The Prius is this decade's H2.

Are you saying that cars go to the scrapyard too early?

I hate the "morally superior"  attitude that comes with the car.   Cougs is right in that driving a little hatchback until the wheels fall off is better for the environment than buying a new car regardless of powertrain.

Vinsanity

Prius drivers have been the cause of contempt and frustration in the past, but it's not so bad in recent years since more sane people have started to drive them as well.

I think a Prius with the engine from the Camry hybrid might be pretty cool, actually.

S204STi

I think South Park nailed it when they called it the Pious.  Their owners are retards, too, for thinking they are driving a "green" car which probably created more pollution in its creation than a turbodiesel.

Hate is a strong word but there are plenty of reasons why the Prius (and, in fact, all hybrids) are technological dead-ends and are not a viable long term solution.

Increased complexity, increased weight, increased cost, the environmental impact caused by the manufacturing and refining of heavy metals used in hybrid batteries, the limited life expectancy of those batteries (not to mention the astronomical expense of replacing them when they do fail) and compromised performance capabilities of hybrid cars all conspire to make the Prius and their ilk a nonstarter for me.

Add to that the grossly inflated mileage claims (thanks to the EPA's outdated testing rules which were never conceived with hybrids in mind) and the fact a VW Golf TDI will get better mileage in the real world (and using proven technology, to boot) and the case for hybrids suddenly evaporates.

The sooner the mindless sheeple wake up to the hybrid hoax, the better,

I hate it for the same reason I hate the Camry. It sucks to drive.

fwiw, it's not "hate" that I feel, just loathing.

+ a billion.

I have more disdain for diesels and the air of smug that comes from them than the Prius. Most people buy Priuses because they want to save on gas, not the enviornment. When you compare the Prius to Camry (and possibly Corolla), Prius is always will be cheaper.

Camry - 22K and 35MPG

Prius - 24K and 50MPG

Is there a space, refinement, power difference between the two? Yes. But many consumers would make the trade off if it means a 15MPG or more gain in economy.

Slippery slope - why buy a new car at all, then?

For example, If I owned a Volt, if I charged it every night, I could theoretically almost never use gas again. My daily commute is less than 40 miles, and I have access to electricity. Do I care about saving the enviornment? No. But my gas bill would be microscopic, and the increase in my electric bill would be comparatively much smaller than paying for several full tanks of gas. And my car is tiny; imagine those who are downsizing out of large cars that they really didn't need, paying sometimes $800 or more in gas a month.

lol - personal finance fail - instead of buying a $40k Volt or $24k Prius how about buying a 4-5 year old ~$12k Civic??????????????????????????

I hate the car because it was so incredibly numb when I drove it, and they scare the shit out of me in the city when I'm on my bike and they're silent.

The drivers are assholes too.

I...don't..?

Let the common people drive common cars.  And if they're good on gas, even better.  I'd never buy one or own one and if I had one given to me, I'd politely refuse.  But for people who don't give a shit about driving, it's a nice little car.

But if you gave me one I'd take it and sell it to buy an old sports car with the money.

I don't hate it, but you cannot convince me it's a sound financial decision, or that it's even remotely interesting to drive ( yes, I have driven a 2010.).

Because it's nice to have a new(ish) car. Not really a slippery slope - the two main impetuses to buy a Prius; environmentalism and MPG; are logical failures.
