Lighten up a bit Cougs. Its a car forum and its just something different  than the usual obama fiat currency threads. and its a Volvo, not a Ferrari....nobody does a double take. ;) still a cool car though.

And anybody on here wound be interested in what car their brother/sister/parents/friends are planning on buying.

But anyway. Is volvo really going to just die and go away?

But that's not really the consensus. They're cool but I don't see them becoming a really popular brand.

China. Geely is trying to make Volvo a key player in China. Similar in market idea to Buick - Buick is doing very well in China.

That I did not know but the problem for Volvo is that peoe think: nice, safe and kinda boring. It doesn't have the same cachet as BMW, Audi or BENZ. But they're more upscale than Honda, for example...so it's an awkward position.

First, be wary of stealing a man child's raging broken premise. Second, my comment was about YOU - you didn't state that you were interested or it's cool or w/e, you stated "looking forward to" which more than implies a that you're going to be at your parents' place, and continue to use the car for appointments, for the foreseeable future. Sounds like a party but it's not a good thing.

My point is be wary of validating yourself through others for you'll end up a stunted semi litrate man child boasting about borrowing your friend's teenage son's family sedan ;).

Does anybody else find the misspelling of the word "literate" here ironic?
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Ha, ha! iPhone FUBAR posting FTW!

But no, no one finds in ironic because it isn't, for a certain particular premise was not met.

That's the term I was looking for, niche brand. Because they kinda straddle the divide between luxury and mainstream. Although it seems they're aiming to be more upscale than they were. They're defintly nice but lets face it, Volvo doesn't have the same cachet as a Mercedes. That matters to a lot of people, doesn't matter how nice the car is.

But they're not cheap either so they're kinda in a tough spot. But I'm a fan....I'm excited to see what their new models bring. It'd be fun to drive the V70 when it arrives in the US.

I feel like the Volvo fanbase is a lot like the Saab fanbase.  And that worked out really well for Saab, right?

Personally, I like Volvo as an idea, but I don't care for any of their current products.

I think you're reading too much into it.  I was excited when my mother got her new car, because it's a kickass car.  I was excited when my brother got his new car for similar reasoning.

That I don't think is an apt comparison...because at the moment it doesn't seem that the new owners are stifling the designers etc. but maybe I'm wrong.

If I started to use it for work stuff and driving it around all the time, you'd have a point. And yeah I took it to a doctors appt the day after she got it because I wanted to try it out.

But now I'm back to the Accord, which is just fine actually.

Not gonna happen. In the US, they're nothing more than a niche brand. They are where Audi was in the 90s.

:wtf:

Those statements contradict each other.  The fact they're nothing more than a niche brand doesn't support them surviving.  Also, they're nothing like Audi.  They don't have VWAG's purchasing power and engineering ability.

I think Volvo's going to do fine. China has a voracious appetite for status symbols, and they perceive Volvo to be one. They're going to dump cash into since it's really the only "domestic" competitor to BMW, MB, et al.

They also have a big thing for Buick right? Which is cool because I just can't see it being a success anywhere else.

It's the 3rd best selling luxury make in the US.....only behind BMW and Lexus. Outsells Audi, Infinti, Acura, Mercedes, Volvo......

The Chinese like Because

- It's soft and smooth luxury; (it's also why they're starting to become partial to Volvo)

- It was one of the first western Automakers in China. The W-body Century/Regal was sold there - big success.

Buick also reaches way downmarket too, they have a minivan and a compact car that are anything but luxurious.

Not anymore. The cheapo cars they've passed on to newly-launched Chevrolet, or SAIC.

Calling Buick a "luxury make" is quite a stretch.  The current Buicks may be fairly decent but they are nowhere near being in the same league as BMW, etc.

Same level as Lincoln and Acura. They're all "Luxury makes", I didn't specify any sort of tiers.

Seems like you don't see too many volvos on the road..., you see them to be sure, but they're not that common.

Imo, Volvo is similar to VW. Premium, but not Premium-Premium. Except that they do not have such deep pockets. I do think it was a blessing for them to be seperated from Ford. Whether the Chinese can lift or sink the brand is an entirely different question, but they were being smothered within the Ford company.

We'll see, but hopefully they survive.
