Mulally leaving Ford early?
By Drew Johnson

Ford Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally could step down before the end of 2014, inside sources have revealed. Mulally, credited with turning around Ford's North American operations, was expected to stay on with Ford until at least the end of 2014.

Ford's board of directors was expecting Mulally, 68, to retain his post until the end of next year, but two sources with knowledge of the situation told Reuters that the board is now considering letting Mulally go early in order to pursue other career opportunities.

The board has reportedly been swayed by the performance of Chief Operating Officer Mark Fields, who is currently being groomed as the next CEO of Ford.

Mulally's name has been tied to the vacant CEO position at Microsoft. Ford worked closely with Microsoft to develop its Sync system, making Mulally an early candidate to take over for departing Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, at least on an interim basis.

For its part, Ford says Mulally will be sticking with the automaker through 2014.

"There is no change from what we announced in November: Alan Mulally plans to continue to serve as Ford's president and CEO through at least 2014," Ford spokesman Jay Cooney told the Detroit Free Press.

And in related news Standard and Poors upgraded Ford to investment grade; the last of the three rating agencies to do so.    This follows upgrades by Moody and Fitch last year.
