So I guess the 918 broke the 7 min ring barrier.

That's true, and I am not knocking them for using these cars as technological test beds (since the rules forbid them from doing so in racing)
Yea but they are both (F12 and MP4-12C) way down on their power/weight ratios and nowhere near as aerodynamically developed. I mean, the Radical SR8 dipped into the 6s with half the horsepower and none of this technology 8 years ago. Zonda R & 599XX did it too. If the goal is a sub 7 minute Ring time this is an expensive way to do it.

The Radical is barely road legal though, in fact it is not road legal in most countries, unlike the 918.

Plus of course it's only good for 1 lap... this thing would get its ass handed to it by a lowly GT3 once the batteries run out. Also curious to know how many of the folks buying these could lap them under 7 minutes. Hell, 8 minutes.

Why do you give two shits how fast the owners can drive the things? What does that have to do with the car at all?

You want to derail a thread about one of the most extraordinary performance cars ever made with just more of your useless blabble.  We get it, you don't think any potential owner is talented, pure, or enthusiast enough to justify owning a vehicle of such performance.  And that's all based on a mindless hunch about what you know about the owners, which is nothing.

Not sure how questioning the relevancy of Ring times in a thread about Ring times is derailment. Plus I never said no potential owner is whatever the fuck hyperbole you are spewing. You should wait for the Midol to kick in before you post.

I have not seen this mentioned anywhere, but can one presume that the V8 used in the 918 is a flat plane, in that two cylinders always fire simultaneously?

It's a flat plane V8 out of an ALMS car I believe. All flat plane means is instead of it having a crank w/pins offset at 90 degrees, it basically has an inline 4 crank with 2 pistons per journal. It's not as smooth as a V8 but it's lighter and simpler.

Many high performance cars use flat plane cranks. Makes sense. Ferrari always has. BMW & Audi just jumped on the bandwagon with their hot V setups. Not sure about anybody else

But with a flat plane you have the option of firing 2 cylinders at once.

I don't know if they ever do. Makes more sense to spread the firings out evenly. That would be like firing 2 cylinders in a 4 banger at once.

Let's be honest, they could have built a car that does the ring in 6 seconds flat and it still wouldn't make certain people happy...

I was thinking the same thing. Lets be honest, they don't give two shits what any of us think. We're a bunch of poor peons to them who will never have the money to buy a car like this. I'm sure they would tell us to fuck off behind closed doors.

There's more to cars than Ring times... if there weren't... we'd all be driving Cobalt SSs

6:47 is the reported time. In the wet....  :mask:

Gotta ask why they're reporting times in the wet.  You'd think they'd wait until they got a solid dry lap in so they can really lay the beat down.

Well, you are not going to find a completely dry Nürburgring until May most probably.  ;)

4 Harley motors?

Performance gains would be lost due to the added weight of all the oil that 4 harley motors would leak.

Apropos 918: It can be ordered with Rims costing € 29,750 (US$ 39,448) Their weight better be measured in grams not kilograms for that price.

Well apparently the $ 39,448 Rims save 15kg (33lbs) of weight. No word on how much weight remains.

If enough oil leaks you can then toss the engine, more weight lost.

I can't even do the 'ring in under 7 minutes on GranTurismo5 in an F1 car.

Weak sauce. And I bet it was a modern F1 car as well.  Niki Lauda did a 6:58.4 1975 in this:
