Is it just me or does this thing look exactly like a 1996 Audi A4?

Like the Merc CLA, the A3 will start and $29,900.

And if you want a manual gearbox, you're out of luck.

But unlike the CLA, you can actually get into the back of one of these, and once through the door, there is actually space to sit there.

Galaxy

From a design point of view it is one of the most pretty current Audis imo. Goes to show flexible the MQB platform is, usually sedans based on hatchbacks do not look good.

cawimmer430

It looks so much better than the 1996 A4.  :praise:

This is car design.

Wut. It just looks like an awkward squashed Audi.

Seriously, I am tired of seeing this design language - as pretty as it may be.

Proportionally, it's a dead ringer for the B7 A4.

I don't think it looks awkward. A bit squashed, but it still looks damn good. I still don't like their current designs quite as well as those of a few years ago, but I don't think there's an Audi on the road right now I don't consider good-looking.

You're my age.  We're getting old.  Plus, now that you're married, your life expectancy has gone way down, since you're more likely to be poisoned by your wife.

I'm so confused. Why does the B5 look so much better?

Looks good IMHO. Looking in to the future I think this car is more likely to be in my driveway than another A4, simply because of size.

Unfortunately it looks like it might not be available with a manual transmission, which may make it a non-starter for me. I doubt I will be looking to buy before 2016 so they have time to expand the line up.

Yup, as cars get bigger some of us tend to have the "buy down" mentality.

I think this car with a 220-240HP sub 2.0 turbo, quattro and a stick would be nice.

Too bad about the transmission though.

Currently there is a big gap between the 180hp I4, and the 300hp S3.

There is no 2.0T "230HP" option?

Currently no, at least not for the german market.

Without a stick, I'd never consider it.  But it does look awesome and I want one.

The A3 sedan will be offered with three engine choices, all of them featuring direct-injection, turbocharging and four cylinders: a 1.8-liter TFSI, 2.0-liter TFSI and 2.0-liter TDI – that last one's a diesel. If you count the S3 sedan, that's another engine in the lineup – a 296-horsepower version of the 2.0 TFSI.

Sounds like in the US there will be an option between the 180 hp and 300 hp engines. I would assume if its not already being sold in the German market it soon would be.

Galaxy

Yes in that case it will likely be offered in  Germany as well.

Que?

Every single Audi, apart from the R8, is a front wheel drive car. Most of them are available in quattro format as well.

They make them but in very low numbers. For example I don't think they sell the FWD A4 here. I have no use for AWD down here.

While I think the take rate is relatively low (compared to the RoW), Audi does sell a FWD A4 and A6. The downside is that they are automatic only.

That being said, AWD is more fun than FWD IMHO. I have had RWD, FWD, and AWD cars in my current location (NJ) and had a FWD car for most of my time in Toronto. Weather was never an issue when it came to which wheels provided the power, but in general I find RWD and AWD the most fun to drive.

For me, I generally like the friskiness of a sporty FWD car to the more staid stability you get with AWD.  FWD usually leads to more fun with lower limits.

That's a huge selling point for me, Colin: Roomy interior & comfort

I sat in the S3 sedan at the Dubai Motorshow, the leg room at the rear is huge, I have no idea how they did that.

That's promising. Hopefully they will make a true A3 wagon instead of that sportback BS.
