Not bad

GoCougs

What's it got for motors and trannies? That's where the first gen Colorado and Canyon were epic and massive failures - lol, I4 and I5, and when it counted, an outdated pooprod V8 in a 2WD "sport" version.

Mustangfan2003

I haven't seen anything about the motors and transmissions.  My dad has one with the I5 and it drives fine to me.

Speed_Racer

I like the look of it! At least from this angle.

Jeez, a crew cab on a truck that small may as well just be a ute.

That's a great local brewery that we have. Do I drink their beer? No.

Drives like shit, really.  The Atlas series are problematic and pointless.

I hope this truck drives at least as well as the Tacoma, or there's no fucking point to it.

Doesn't matter, they'll have their bulk made in fleet sales regardless.

Don't think my dad ever had a problem with this.  My mom has a Trailblazer and the MPG is terrible.  It has had problems but nothing engine related.

Mustangfan2003

The world truck only comes in a diesel so no way that happens in America.  Some think the 3.6 will be offered in this truck.

Engine displacement is largely irrelevant; weight and areo determine MPG.

I can tell you definitively that the Atlas engines are starting to show some serious flaws, mainly with the cylinder heads.  I'm glad yours have been fine.

But even besides that, the shitty Isuzu underpinnings never had a chance.  The Ranger drove better on a chassis three decades old...

Which is why bigger engines always get worse gas mileage, right?

Could be coup if it has decent motors. The class leader (Tacoma) is literally 10 years old and has had virtually zero advancement in that time.

Nope. It's weight and aero, not engine size.

Looks like the same generic GM 2.5L and 3.6L.

I don't know how I feel about this.

I feel like a small car based ute or coupe utility would be better for the market.

Here is my predicted engine lineup

2.5 I4
2.8 I4 Diesel (fingers crossed)
3.6 or 4.3 V6, they will likely pick the one that's cheapest to produce.

2o6

S204STi

The 3.6 makes good power.  Leaky, but strong.

It seems like it makes power wayy too late for a pickup truck....

Ha, sure Cougs.

Physics tells us so ;). If it takes 50 hp to push a Silverado down the highway at 60 mph, 50 hp is 50 hp. That the bigger engine has to move a bit more air to produce that 50 hp (pumping losses) is relatively minor - probably 5% or less. Differences that aren't weight or aero related can be contributed to things like gearing, tire size, etc. V8 trucks are a good example as typically the "small" V8 is the same weight as the bigger V8 option. Despite 50+ more hp and 60+ more cubic inches, the bigger V8 slightly lower MPG are logically attributable to the lower diff gears:

2014 2WD Silverado specs:
355 hp 5.3L, 6sp AT, 3.08 diff gears standard:
16/23

420 hp 4.2L, 6sp AT, 3.42 diff gears standard:
15/21

2014 F-150 specs
360 hp 5.0L, 6sp AT, 3.31 diff gears standard
15/17

411 hp 6.2L, 6sp AT, 3.55 diff gears standard
13/15

Wash/rinse/repeat with other examples - you'll not find a big difference, and when you do, you'll be able to attribute it to something as in these examples (= gearing).

Mustangfan2003

I kinda thought the 4.3 could've been in the mix since it's been around for ages and it's OHV.  Interested to see how the diesel will do.

If they tune it (cams, heads) and gear it (at least 6sp AT) correctly it will suffice.

Mustangfan2003

So it looks like the truck will only be offered in a six speed auto,  booooo!!!!!

GM has to make many many more 3.6L V6s, so the economies of scale probably nudged things in that direction. It's also gonna be a more refined motor too.
