The First Ever 2014 Cadillac ELR: Poolside

the liberals don't like it because it's arrogant and xenophobic.  fox newscasters, on the other hand, love it.

it's very over the top for a national car commercial.  pretty dam daring actually.  i like it and i find it more funny than anything else because the guy is such a caricature of a CEO type prick.

GoCougs

Caricature???

Ha, ha! That is awesome and true. No one's buying the ELR though, as stunning as it is.

Soup DeVille

Its polarizing, and its got people talking: which after all, is a major purpose of adverising, no?

Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

I didn't find the ad offensive but it didn't really seem to have a point, and did absolutely nothing to describe what was special about the ELR. My mother wrote to me unsolicited to say that she'd found it offensive, though -- "are they trying to say 'only buy a Cadillac if you're an arrogant prick?'" And she mistook the electric car charger for an in-home gas station.

CALL_911

I didn't find it offensive either, but it really wasn't a good ad for a car as unique as the ELR. Same shit could have been said for the CTS or the XTS.

Pretty dumb ad, but aren't almost all of them? Offended I ain't; not that I'd want to hang out with that dude.

The liberals shouldn't be so nativist.

I have yet to meet a german that didn't view their upscale automakers as extremely exceptional. In fact most Europeans and definitely most asians view their culture as superior and they have no qualms about saying it. The Chinese will take their rightful place as a world power. The Japanese well, they view everyone else as insignificant and inferior, much the same in Korea. The french pass laws to try and limit US influence on their culture.

Mustangfan2003

A lot of Murica in that ad.  Oh well keep drinking your fruity drinks Eurosnobs.

Were better at self loathing than everybody but the Irish.

So, Cadillac is trying to go after the self-absorbed douchebag market currently being served by Lexus?

Ha, funny commercial.  But considering that the ELR isn't exactly the most amazing car available and its closest competitor (Tesla) is also American, I don't really see the point of harping on American exceptional-ism.

I read an advertising trade magazine article earlier this week and the CMO Uwe Ellinghaus did a last minute switcharoo, swapped out an unnamed Cadillac and put in the ELR. He wouldn't say what other model he pulled (should have shown the Elmiraj), or why. Just thought it was an interesting tidbit.

Should've been the new 'Lade - 6,000 lbs and 420 hp, baby!

Yes.!

Cadillac knows their clientele. that's the target, not ad critics or the average joe schmoe.  They need to point out to the German car buying snobs and the Japanese luxury buying snobs that Cadillac stands out for SOME reason or another....

(Doesn't romney own two of them?  )

Rather than the good ol' boy with a bit of spare cash in his pocket...mostly from GM buyout packages with a car bonus attached.

Well, on one hand, it's easy to rip into the French.  People have been doing it for decades.  On the other, it's a damn good ad.  It's got good energy, it makes bold statements, and if the viewer is an American, it puts them in a positive place.

Although I noticed that they show him unplugging the car and then he's magically in it.  No shot of him trying to put the plug and cord away.

Just saw my first ELR on the street this afternoon in the gallery district of Chelsea (NYC). I tried to grab my iPhone but wasn't quick enough as it passed.

It was silver, and I have to say was a pretty beautiful car.

That's the kind of guy you like to see with a flat tire on a two lane road on a cold and rainy night.  It's a bonus if there is water pooled in the road that allows you to further soak him as you drive through it.

I don't like the ELR anywhere near as much as I did in pictures or when it was the Converj concept. It's too stumpy....a lot of the Converj's attractive ness was it's striking proportions. needs more wheelbase

Mustangfan2003

Why is the car 2 door, doesn't GM know that coupes have a smaller market share?

Laconian

I'll hold judgment on the ELR until I see one for myself. It is a much better flagship for Caddy luxury than the XLR. Every XLR superlative was qualified with "...for a Corvette".

Well, this was my first big time interior project to really hit the market.  I guess I can talk about it now that it's in production.  I worked on this non-stop for 4 months in Detroit 5-days a week or so.   Quoted and hashed out the design for the whole instrument panel, center console, and door panels.

Shame they're going to sell only a couple hundred a year and has such goofy proportions.  It'll always be kind of special to me.

Too bad you didn't have one of the Android phones.  Then you could have said "Ok Google Now Play jump out of pocket and take a photo" and it would have done that.
