I dropped my wife's keys in a sewer. We fished it out and so far it still works. German engineering

Naw it has a remote and security transponder. Worked after a ton of disinfectant and everything.

Both my CSX (all in one key) and RSX keys have been through the wash and the remotes still work fine.

My jeep remote shorted out and set the panic alarm off while it was in the washer.

I like the backseat door lock switches on our Jetta.  I can lock and unlock all of the doors.  It's not necessary, but it's nice.  I like it.

I doubt VW developed the key fob.  They likely outsourced it.

OEMs are just assemblers and facilitators nowadays.

Yes. I think it is made by Hella, and they make most keys for German cars nowdays.

I'm pretty sure VW designed it though, which = engineering.

Honestly, even that is very unlikely.  They more likely gave Hella (or whomever makes it) a specification and subbed out the entire design and engineering of the fob, as well as the interfacing module in the vehicle.  Just as companies go to the likes of Getrag or Magna-Steyr to develop transmissions and 4WD/AWD systems for their vehicles.

Like any modern company, Industrial design is a strong force. There's no way that key left the gate without ID looking at it and making it prettyful.
