Today I learned that you could actually get a W140 S-Class (S280, S300, S320) with a manual transmission. Looks awful.

Florida Ford GT Owner Crashes Because He's "Unfamiliar" With Manual Transmission

A Ford GT owner in Boca Raton, Florida crashed his recently purchased supercar into a tree Friday evening because he was "unfamiliar with how to drive stick shift," police say.

The driver, 50-year-old Robert J. Guarini, told police he lost control after downshifting while leaving his housing development at around 6 p.m. This led to a head-on collision with a palm tree. Guarini then told a nearby security worker that he did not have his phone and needed a ride back to his house, where he spoke to police via landline after leaving the vehicle unattended, police say.

If you took and passed your driving test in an automatic, your license should marked to allow driving of automatics only.
Passing your test in a manual should be the only ticket to being allowed on the public roads in a manual.

The car also wasn't registered or insured. Somebody is losing a lot of money.

Lol. Yep; about $700,000. Half of that for repairs, half for loss in residual value.

Yeah, that's that dumb shit they do in Europe. So if someone, a child, for example, the people who get drivers' licenses, only has access to their family cars, which are automatics, when getting their license, they have to learn independently, get access to a manual car, and then pay to retake their driving exam just because they learned a new skill? That's stupid. If you take your driver test in a car with a backup camera, should it be illegal for you to drive a car without one? What if you take it in a four door, should you need a new license for coupes and convertibles because the visibility is worse?

I never want to put the DMV between someone and their want to drive a manual. That would hasten the death of an already dying feature.

My wife claimed that she could drive a manual when we ordered our first car together.  When it arrived and she went to drive it she said "I thought it had something to do with the steering."  i never quite understood what she meant.  Sitting in the passenger seat as she attempted to coordinate the clutch and gas while trying to shift into the proper gear was one of my most traumatizing experiences.

I need to find a new Civic to test drive. Might get one later this summer if they're as good as they seem.

A used BMW 3 series would be nice but I don't want to deal with fixing stuff on a commuter car.

I drove a very new-ish Civic with the tiny turbo engine and an Emmanuel transmission - very nice - but it wasn't the new new 2022+ Civic. I am curious about the redesign. 42 MPG highway is pretty nice for a non-hybrid. That's like what my Fiesta 1.0 got.

Agree.  Requiring a separate DMV test for driving a manual transmission would put a final nail in it's coffin.  I don't think, statistically, getting hurt or killed because of being hit by someone who doesn't know how to drive a manual transmission is a significant cause of roadway mishaps.  It happens but really really rarely.  You can't legislate everything.

FoMoJo

Driving a manual, whether you want to or not, becomes rote once the reflexes kick in.  It really doesn't take very long.
