As usual, you reccomend the worst fucking options in the thread as evidenced by someone who has never turned a wrench on anyone of those fuckers

I presented a variety of options based on MaxPower's requirements and budget.  I know you think anything that isn't a Toyota or a Honda is a piece of shit, but most reasonable people tend to be more open minded than you.

For the record, I tried to find a 4Runner within his $10K budget that didn't have intergalactic mileage on the odometer, but they simply don't exist.  The Nissan Pathfinder I posted was as close as I could get.  Blame the unwashed masses for thinking anything with that stupid-looking stylised "T" on the grille is The Greatest Thing Ever, which keeps the prices of used examples firmly within the city limits of Crazytown.  However, there are still plenty of us who refuse to pay over the odds for the dubious privilege of owning a car from the world's most overrated brand.

DOOOOD   I saw just today a Discovery (auto, light interior) with some awesome awesome accessories attached. Roofrack full of cool stuff, plus giant jack attached to the spare on the rear. We're talking an awning, some kind of tent or something, etc...

$8500.

They drove it to Central America and back.

BTW sounds like you're shopping real off-roaders, have you thought of the crossovers??

Flex, Highlander, Pilot all get better gas mileage than the true off-roaders and can still do some dirt.

Is it that bad? I like the way they look,  but I've never driven one.

No, but you have to get one of the v8 models. V6 versions were dog slow and generally have only one-spd awd.

Check the v8 box and they generally come with quadra-tracII (locking front and rear diffs, 2 spd transfer). Not a better drive system in the segment.
They ride quite well and the handling feels much lighter than they are, they did a great job with the solid rear axle.
I drove the V8 explorer, 4runner, etc., hands down the big jeep felt better in every way.

I'd actually recommend an NC since it has better ground clearance for off roading.

Finally some good advice in this thread!

I've been looking into Discovery maintenance. It's a lot of preventative stuff that I should be able to do, the issue is finding an example I am satisfied that has been well cared for previously.

Bad to drive in every. single. condition, except slowly off road. Loud wind noise with any top configuration. You get to be part of moron broJeep culture. Bad interior. Not all that cheap (thanks broJeepers). Did I mention broJeepers?

If I needed to drive a broJeep to feel masculine, then that really would be a sad state, wouldn't it?

I do speak from experience, though. They are shitty. ;)

What is the newest model you've driven? The old ones were punishing and uncomfortable on-road, the new ones are light years ahead and could even be called comfortable (the body roll does take a little getting used to).
