I'm talking strictly styling now...

What was

Audi 100/200 - Circa 1990 - 1994

(Audi C5 - 1997 thru 2004)

"Progress" (Audi C6 - 2005 thru 2011)

But I do agree. I still dig the austerity of German design in the 90s (moreso than the 80s).

However, I think the C5 A6 (and the Q7) had an uncharacteristically ugly interior.

One of my favorite interiors (and cars) of all time.

That old Audi interior is really nice. The old Porsche not so much.

The old Audi interior - is that real wood?

That last gen A6 interior is essentially what my S4 looks like, and yes I think it looks really good (otherwise I wouldn't have bought it  ). I had a prior gen A4 (2004 1.8T) and it also had a nice interior that more resembled the older cars you posted, but IMHO it wasn't as nice as the newer ones. Materials and ergonomics all got better.

My mother has a B7 A4 (a 2007). Its interior is styled quite conservatively, but I think it still looks terrific (I prefer it to the B8's). It has also held up really, really well.

I'll take C5 interior + the 100/200 four small analog gauges high up in the center + C5 steering wheel + C6 seats.

Klackamas

I'll take the older Audi 100/200 one piece dash anyday, with woodgrain, center analog gauges and add a touchscreen navigation in the middle.

Way too many buttons on that new center console where you have to take your eyes off the road.

Plus hard controls are the way to go for audio and heat A/C.
This thing of drilling down into menus in the latest cars with iDrive for common controls is distracting as hell.

Plus those oval shaped pods around speed and tach on the C6 look like crap. Tries to look fancy but looks cheap. To each their own I guess.

I think Mercedes and BMW have gone much the same route.

5 Series E34 - 1988 - 1996

5 Series E39 - 1995 - 2003

5 Series E60 - 2003 - 2010

5 Series F10 - 2010 -

I'll take the E39 with an updated touchscreen navigation over the later or earlier models. Again, to each their own.

The design actually gets worse with the spaceship goofy looking E60 and better with the later F10

While i don't particularly car for the stylistic directions that a lot of interiors have taken (I'm driving a car, not a spaceship); its hard to argue that new cars aren't a pleasant place to spend time in.

There have been safety mandated changes over the years too though that a lot of people aren't entirely aware of; and I'm not just talking about accommodating more and more airbags and more serious headrests. There are rules also that pertain to the minimum radii of convex and concave shapes.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

While I generally liked Merc design language from this era, I was never a huge fan of the W140 interior.  Materials and build were top notch, but the offset center air vents just ruin it for me.

I still love the look of the W220.  The post facelift interior was an improvement, for the most part, but the new wide screen nav unit didn't look as well integrated into the dashboard as the old unit did.

A step up in terms of materials quality, and in the two tone combination here, it looks very nice.  Still, I'm not 100% convinced by the pregnant 745 knockoff center stack.

In V12 trim, this is the nicest interior I've sat save for the RR Phantom.

I really like German interiors from the '80s. Clean design, not much extra stuff, good quality materials and good construction, not flashy (especially relative to today). My 944 is one of the highest points, IMO.

Eh, times change, and shiny wood appliqué is out of style. If you still crave some wood, I believe it's available in all Audi models. For the money, I maintain Audi still makes the best interiors.

I generally prefer interiors from the late 90s or early/mid 2000s before the advent of touchscreen thingys... I enjoy the simplicity

A lot of interiors went downhill in the late 90s, early 2000s....but have since recovered.

Audi makes fantastic interiors as people have mentioned. Everything feels just right.

To me it looks too busy and a bit incoherent, the AC/Heat vents look really cheap.

I like that interior, but I'm with you on the vents. I also never liked the shiny black plastic surrounding the CD slot and the passenger airbag off indicate beneath the hazard button.

I've always really liked the post-facelift 220's interior (particularly the CL's)

I'm amazed at how good post-facelifted 220s still look, and how shitty pre-facelifted 220s now look.

meh I barely even notice the "look" or "feel" of the car as much as I care how functional and comfortable the interior is.

Generally speaking I am not a fan of wood on interiors, but that does look good. Much nicer than the shiny stuff.
