Fuck that technology. Like the article said... never mind the legal culpability issues, driving in the damn thing will make you sick. I can't stand being a passenger as it is.

My hunch most would probably be alright once they get used to it (like riding on a bus or flying in a plane). I have vertigo issues so I'd probably be really susceptible to it.

Even so elf-driving cars are ridiculous notions and not only because they speak to even greater government control (in homogenizing road design, tracking movement).

Getting car sick is for the weak.

Unfair. I've flown in dozens of aircraft, including the CT-133 Shooting Star (P-80) and I'm a trained SAR spotter. I've had an inner ear issue all my life and as a car passenger I do get queasy sometimes. It does not make one "weak".

hotrodalex

It's misleading I think. Automated cars aren't a whole lot different for passengers. Otherwise I think we would have heard real reports, not just scary speculation.

giant_mtb

These things can't even drive in the rain and now they're gonna make people sick?  Pfffff.

I can totally see excessive braking and steering adjustments made by the computer in reaction to what the sensors are transmitting.

That's what I'm thinking. Especially since an automated car on real public roads is literally the only automated car on the road. It's gotta deal with...100% us.

All videos of the GoogleCar seem to show much smoother driving than a real person. Which is to be expected - computers can process and make decisions faster, their attention span isn't as limited.

You think Google would allow anything other than smooth awesome driving videos to leak out?

Any production self driving car is going to have smooth programming. People won't switch if they don't trust it to drive more safely than they can.

One day I shall open a tire repair facility, put a huge pothole in the road about a half mile up the road, and see how many autonomous driving cars drive into the tire eating pothole and then into my shop....

I'm sure the average commuter will embrace self driving cars as a huge leap in modern convenience. I'm NOT one of them.

Lol, the only thing making me sick about all this is the hyperbole and irrational speculation. You guys are smarter than this, I know it.

By the logic in this thread and that article there's no point in having passenger seats in cars. Come the fuck on guys.

And Cougs..... Cougs.... govt tracking? Do you not carry a cell phone or have a license plate on your car? Homogenized roads? Last I checked all roads in America have yellow medians, white shoulders and homogeneous traffic signs and devices.

And I've already demonstrated AD NAUSEUM why wholesale shifting to automated cars won't be a reality we see in our lifetimes, or possibly EVER. You guys are so ridiculous and irrational when it comes to this shit, it makes no sense.

I can TOTALLY see automated cars becoming available within 50yrs. The tech in cars right now was futuristic in 1950.

Well, as far that goes: U of M is as left and progressive as any other large state university anywhere is: I doubt they're worried about angering GM. The traditional feeder schools to the auto industry are Lawrence and Kettering: not to say that UM or MSU grads aren't employed there by the thousands, but UM is not beholden to them for much, if anything.

You've been in the south how long and you still haven't seen a dirt road, or an unpainted two lane?

Ive seen both, hell there were unpainted 2 lanes in NYC

Easy realistic fix, humans would have to do the driving where self driving cars couldnt. Or harder but still pretty easy to arrive at fix, self driving cars would have to be able to traverse dirt or unpainted roads (as they would anyway to do surface streets)

The whole "o self driving cars cant trail brake thru an intersection, looks like it cant happen at all" thing is silly. It is already happening and the way it is happening is how it will continue to happen... voluntary driver's aids.

That means asking the human to do the hard stuff like driving in rain, fog, and snow. How could we expect people to be great at that if they've hardly even learned to drive on dry pavement 'cause they're cool enough to have a car that sort of can drive itself if the weather is perfect.

But I agree with your other statement...not gonna see an automated car takeover in my lifetime. Just like how electric cars aren't gonna take over completely for many, many years to come, despite what the government likes to think and preach. (Unless fossil fuels go dry, then it will make sense.)
