2o6 Quick Review - Jeep Renegade

2o6

+ tons of room
+ lots of gimmicky, but cute little designerly touches
+ good interior quality
+ shift quality is very good and the transmission is adept at being at the right place despite having nine gears to choose from

- crapola ride
- horrible handling (I know it's an SUV but the car feels like it's going to tip over with every mildly fast corner)
- slow as shit, this one is a 2.4L and it manages to feel even worse, with no torque and just bleh.
- 2.4 has a lot of NVH issues inside.
- horrible visibility out front
- gets really expensive really quickly

seems they're aiming at the Kia soul crowd..

Jeep has really cut what their brand stands for the last 10yrs.

What the hell is that thing. Never seen one. Looks pretty dumb for a Jeep.

12,000 RPM

They still make the Wrangler

I think they have managed the brand well. The Patriot was BASURA, but the GC has evolved into an American Range Rover, the Cherokee has become useful/relevant to normal people, etc. etc. Lotus stuck true to what their brand "stands for" and look where it got them....

A Kia Soul that is competent off road...

No one gives Land Rover shit when the Evoque and Discovery Sport/Freelander/LR2 Are also FWD based cars

AutobahnSHO

When you say competent, how competent do you mean??

Yea the illusion of SUVs being bought to go off road has been long dead.

It's got a decent 4WD system, and decent approach and departure angles

Besides, most people use these to get out of sand/mud/snow. No one gives a shit bout rock climbing.

giant_mtb

It's often the case that the smaller, weaker 4WD will get a lot farther than the big ones with 35s and big engines.  Like a TRACKER.  Will it climb rocks and go through 2 feet of mud?  Of course not, but it can weasel its way around those obstacles because it's hardly bigger than a 2-seater side-by-side.

2o6

My basic verdict is that if you don't really need 4WD, just save some cash and buy a 1.6L Soul. The soul will return far better economy and is cheaper with a far better ride.

The 2.4L is a turd.

I love the way it looks, but I wouldn't want to spend money on a rolling caricature

Or a Soul 2.0-liter, which has more features, more power, and the same fuel economy...

Which, by the way, is 26 mpg in mixed driving per EPA, compared to 25 mpg for a 2.4-liter FWD Renegade. The Soul is a pretty nice car, but gas mileage is a major flaw.

Eye of the Tiger

I am interested in the turbo 6-speed with "4WD".

Ugliness hasn't stopped Nissan from selling a bazillion Jukes.  I expect to see a similar number of these little Jeeplets running around very soon.

Yep.  Nearly all the used Jeeps I come across are 2WD.

If the only people who bought SUVs were people who actually needed them, you would never see any.

I see a ton of college girls driving Libertys. Is this the Jeep for the current generation of HS/college girls?

Lotus has never been much more than a boutique automaker with a very limited and low volume model range and very long model/platform life cycles.

Being owned by GM certainly didn't help them any, either.
