Fuck, that is actually a really good answer.

Shame Acura was so ahead of its time with that one. BMW/MB are laughing all the way to the bank with the X6/GLE Coupe.

The X6 concept pre-dated the ZDX by 2 years (and beat the ZDX to production by over a year).

Back to the original question:

Honestly, if I had to go to one car, I'd get a Wrangler. It's literally the only current vehicle that meets both of my primary requirements ((1) convertible and (2) enough off road ability to get me to almost any trail head).

I have decided against the one car fits all plan.  It was a fun idea to throw around, but I will stay with a two car lineup.  BRZ will hopefully be sold this week.  The Genesis will go next.  I will have a new daily driver, and then I'll wait until the dead of winter and my bonus comes in to buy a cheaper toy of some sort.

How long have you had the Genesis for, 6 mos?

Mr H do they have any exotic car clubs by you? Manhattan car club has shit like E30 M3s and 964 911s along with Range Rovers and shit. If I had the $$$ I'd be down to try something like that for a year or two.

About a year.  Dealership took most of that first year depreciation (they sold a $48k MSRP car to me for $32k).  Get rid of it now, it will have been a pretty cheap adventure for a year.  If I keep it another year, I'm going to lose my lunch on the depreciation.

Not a bad idea.  But I live in Dayton, OH.  They don't have super car clubs around here   One of the best Porsche collections in the country is here in a museum, but they don't rent them out.

I don't think there is just one do everything car.  The Chevy SS is good because it's a muscle car, sports sedan, and family car all wrapped into one.  But it can't tow a boat or be used to haul shit to the dump.  For that a pickup would be best, and that's why the best selling vehicles are trucks.  But trucks aren't sports cars, but they can be used as family cars and muscle cars.  Pickups tick more of the boxes than cars do unfortunately.

Yes, but for the percentage of time the average person would be driving to the dump or towing a boat, it'd just be better to rent or something. DD'ing a truck for the off-chance that you might use it to tow something or haul something is such a huge penalty.

For someone who doesn't like driving trucks, sure.

I tow a boat every weekend for nearly 3 months every summer and I go to the dump at least 1 a month.  If I could afford to dump the Explorer and my utility trailer and just get an F-150, I would.

Conversely...

The percentage of time the average person would be driving an SS (or basically any sports car) at its limits, it'd be better to rent. DDing a sports car for the off chance that you might get to actually race it on a track...etc etc.

We should all just be driving Leafs and just rent trucks and sports cars when we want to!

1. An SS isn't a sports car. It's just a fast family sedan.

2. DD'ing a sports car or sports sedan is nowhere near as much of a penalty as a truck. You get much better MPG in something like a Miata or even a 370Z or Genesis than a truck, while also having a smaller car to drive in traffic (much easier to drive than a truck in rush hour stop and go traffic). Plus, one can enjoy the sporty attributes of a sports car on something like an on ramp, roundabout, backroads, etc on the way to/from work. How would you enjoy the extra towing capacity or payload of a truck on a day to day commute (not counting if you're a tradesman or something where you'd have to haul around tools and other stuff)? Not to mention other things such as consumables (tires, brakes, etc) are all cheaper on a sports car than a truck as well.

All that is just IMO anyways. Craig's right. I don't like driving trucks and think they're a waste for daily commuting. It's not my money or car, though.

Penalty in your eyes, yeah.  I like having a truck because, beyond towing/hauling (which admittedly I don't do much of), I can hop on a back road or powerline or trail somewhere whenever I want and go somewhere cars can't, even if it's just a quick brap equivalent to busting out a few on ramps on the way home from work.  That's why I wanted a small truck...not looking for brute force, just a capable vehicle.

It all comes down to personal preference in the end. You either sacrifice the sportiness or you sacrifice the utility.

Speaking of tires, fuck. Not looking forward to buying tires for Tacoma. :mask:

Though 18" low pro high-po tires on sports cars aren't exactly cheap, either, and many have pretty damn big brakes.

BimmerM3

Or just have one of each.

RE: Tires - they're more expensive for trucks but tend to last longer too, especially compared to soft compound sports car tires, especially when factoring in sporty driving styles.

A sports car does not only give benefits to the driver when driven at the limit. Common misconception.

I dont know what dry dock prices are like by you, but I feel like no matter what the price it's probably worth it.

Or you can have a boat the way I do.... my friend owns one and is all too eager to invite us all out

80% of my driving is commuting and the rest isn't very demanding WRT cargo or people. I could make do with a lot.

A slip is $1200 a year and you're only using it for 3 or 4 months. Makes cleaning your boat a PITA, and besides, there is a 4 year waiting list.

You will prob save that much in gas alone with a vehicle that doesn't have to tow...................

Even if I got on the list, it's 4 more years. Besides, I do enough truck stuff I would still need it.

I'm starting a business this month that I hope to have going full tilt in the spring and I am going to need a pickup at that point anyway. Either a Ram or an F-150. Ram has Ram Box which I really really like, but F-150 has the reliability and the 5.0L. Ram Box is a huge plus for me, but it will come down to price.

Save with trucks. Higher seating is better in traffic. Large size keeps people from cutting you off (in some places). Some people like the feeling of power.
