Hopefully they leverage the Alpha platform for a follow up

No shit. Nobody bought the things because GM failed in the exact same way they failed with the GTO.

Puzzled by the angst - it was car that from the get-go had a hard stop vis-a-vis the end of the Zeta platform and ceasing manufacturing in Australia - these things were known before the SS ever came to fruition.

Because they still would have stopped production if they sold a million of them.

Yeah this is not news. Its was actually "good news" that they decided to go ahead and make a 2017 model year even though the plant is already closing up shop. I assume they are making inventory that they will keep selling once the plant is totally shuddered.

Would be interesting if they make an Alpha platform version but I doubt they will. IIRC this car is a huge money loser and only exists because of some contractual agreement from when Lutz was around (like they had to import something from GM Australia or something).

Father-in-laws purchase of the SS has been an interesting one.  No manuals in stock anywhere really.  Local dealer wouldn't even take him seriously about ordering one.  Ended up contacted the dealer his family all uses in Iowa.  They said they'd try and hunt one down.  Couldn't find one.  He placed an order, but had to wait awhile to see if it was accepted.  They're probably running one a few days a week or something like that.

Finally got confirmation his order was accepted.  Waited for a build date.  Eventually got a build date and VIN.  Waited on a boat, finally got shipped here.  Now it's stuck going through customs.  It'll be another month probably until it shows up in Iowa and he can go pick it up.

With such an easy purchase process it's a real mystery as to why they haven't been selling

Large sedan sales are generally down... a large sedan that looks like a last gen Malibu and costs 2x as much is a very tough sell. I wonder if GM is hamstringing this to maintain interest in the Camaro.... if they basically made a Chevy CTS with all the magneto shocks + 10AT etc I'm struggling to come up with a reason why anyone would get a Camaro.

Yeah, the whole acceptance of orders thing is what was really weird.  And being in Australia, it takes extra long to get here.  They have to idling the plant a ton, and I don't know if they're trying to batch manufacture these or something, and that's why it's questionable whether they'll accept the order.  I'm guessing they're trying to bleed component inventory, so it's a really strange process right now.

He'll have a 2017 Chevy SS though, which is likely the last V8, manual, RWD sedan ever.  It'll be a cool car to keep in the family.  I convinced him to look at it instead of getting an X5   He even got it optioned the way I would.

BMW is still fighting the good fight with the M5 I think...

Have there even been that many manual V8 sedans over the last ~20 years? Only the old M3, M5 and S4 come to mind.

And sadly.... most of those cars would have a hard time getting away from an automatic 330i

Wait, what?  A Chevy SS would destroy an automatic 330i

Actually, yes, that was for the DCT. Manual is ~12.2 sec or so.

Also, the F30 330i is still a relative lol wut at about 14.0 sec (and that's with/because of the 8AT).

Why is a 4 cylinder 3er so relevant to mention it twice now?

Styling! And the fact that most younger people don't want a large 4 door sedan.

I've seen a few automatics in the wild. I know one guy at Bilstein who ordered a manual, and then father in law. Never seen a manual in the wild though. They're pretty damn rare.
