So what makes 3rd gear produce that sexy high pitched whine? It's like a wee supercharger.

Versa S makes that whine in every gear. Sorry you're missing out.

I'd assume it's just the right amount of load. My car sounds different in every gear.

The gears aren't cut correctly.  The sound you hear is shearing metal.

There's a weird electric motor whine that sounds almost intake-y, and I think it's the self-leveling lights. That might be the noise you're hearing.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

Tave

But it also has a pronounced intake and exhaust resonance, at least in comparison to other engines its size and type.

Nah, it's proportional to engine RPM, but not throttle/load. I think it's the transmission.

If you push in the clutch, let the engine drop to idle, and coast, does it still make the noise?

Bwap bwap bwap, took it for a spin around some country roads. FFS, it keeps taking longer and longer to leave the congested areas. Once I hit the rural areas the car performed like a dream, hugging the corners just right, powering up the hills with plenty of steam, and somehow returning a 29.5mpg trip average at the same time. I let my dad drive it and he thought it was so much better than my brother's NA Miata. He complains often about how nervous and loud the NA is on the highway. Wotta wimp.

* The stereo is kind of worthless above 40mph for the level of road noise that enters the cabin.
* Hill holder is annoying because it gets rid of a useful tactile sign for clutch engagement. I liked being able to roll back a little bit.

Is there any way to turn it off?

I'm sure it's beneficial for n00bs so they don't have to worry about hills and can just focus on the fun driving. But the clutch is super easy to work in the ND, so anyone with a little experience should be able to get moving up a hill with minimal effort. Honestly when I test drove it, I thought they might have a clutch delay valve like newer BMWs. Seemed like I could dump the clutch quickly and it never cared.

I don't mind it in the Z4, actually.  I wouldn't suggest it for a novice stick driver, but after a while, it's not so bad.

I really think that at this point in automobile history, those few diehards who still choose a manual transmission should be left alone to enjoy their anachronisms. Engineers who have the urge to tamper with what is clearly a consumer's choice to forgo automatic drivers' aids by adding what they think will aid the drivers should just sit down and watch a PowerPoint about infotainment systems or something.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?
