Not surprising at all. They used the i8 and i3 to play around with the tech, and are now introducing it to their most popular model.

12,000 RPM

Mixed feelings (as usual). Actually, mostly negative feelings. Verdict is still out on the environmental impact on batteries, so there's that, along with all the general hassles of electric. Plus I think the i line is a better introductory venue for the whole electric thing. I was hoping for something to bridge the gap between the i3 and i8... something that could legitimately seat 4 but not be a quasi supercar. I imagine this will cost as much as an "i6" or whatever (which would be a tragically ironic name). Not to mention I don't see how they will bring the fight to Tesla when Tesla has the luxury of selling the Model 3 at a loss.

Personally I'm more excited for the proliferation of 48V mild hybrid systems, which I'm pretty sure BMW is on board with, and more mass production carbon fiber, which BMW is a leader in.

the i5 recently got canceled

12,000 RPM

It must have been very recent. What a shame, I can't imagine anyone buying an electric 3 over this:

that's a fuckin render. The patent drawing is a lot more ungainly

MX793

Does the patent render also look like it's pooping out another car?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this thing's tires wouldn't be appreciably wider than the bike tires on the i3.  Based on the proportions of the render, I'm guessing 195 max.

I'm just talking about the profile from an aesthetic POV. They're definitely throwing shopping cart wheel rubber on either of these things
