Just posting this here in case anyone wants to spend $170,000...

1995 Mercedes E60 AMG Is A Souped-Up 500E Worth $170K

The Mercedes-Benz 500E was the flagship of the W124 series, but AMG, at the time an independent tuner, launched an even hotter version of the V8-powered sedan. It was called the E60 AMG and came towards the end of the popular midsize luxury saloon's life cycle.

Based on the legendary, Porsche-built 500E, it is the Holy Grail of the W124 generation. No one knows exactly how many units AMG built, but the general consensus is that the tuner handcrafted between 100 and 150 examples.

Naturally, the rarity as well as the mystique surrounding this car means it's also very expensive, as this particular E60 AMG for sale in The Netherlands proves. The Signal Red-painted model with red/black leather-appointed interior and maple wood trim is offered for a whopping €149,500 (approximately $168,000).

It's hard to believe that a 24-year-old Mercedes-Benz W124 can cost that much but, like we said, this is no ordinary W124. For starters, it's powered by a naturally aspirated 6.0-liter V8 rated at 381 PS (376 hp) instead of the 500E's 326 PS (322 hp) 5.0-liter unit.

Besides the more powerful engine, the AMG Technik Packet also includes a stiffer AMG-tuned suspension, 17-inch AMG wheels, an AMG Aero package and an AMG exhaust system.

This particular car comes with features such as air conditioning, cruise control, a power sunroof, Bose sound system, front sports seats (power-adjustable with memory and heating), heated sports rear seats, power windows, electrically adjustable and heated mirrors, Sport and Economy settings for the four-speed automatic transmission, and more.

Back in the day, the E60 AMG was capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds and could reach an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). We see no reason why this red example can't achieve those figures today, particularly since its odometer reads only 71,014 km (44,126 miles).

380HP out of 6L.... meanwhile the CLA45 gets a hair less from 1/3 the displacement. Not a swipe, just an observation; this is obviously the better car

Not a fan of the color though; W124s are supposed to be subdued.

But think of the longevity: 380-hp out of 6 liters is gonna mean less stress/wear and tear than 380-hp out of 2 liters.  :ohyeah:

I'm still not a fan of the W124. I find them ugly, in sedan, wagon, coupe, convertible or special edition models. Never understood why people thought that design was so "pretty" and still like it.

I love the looks of that generation E-Class. A high point for Mercedes design IMO.

There is a RENNtech 500E floating around with a N/A 6.0 making 440 HP.

The AMG build isn't as extreme, though.  The RENNtech 6.0 has racing buckets, a 6-speed, etc.

Really?  I've always thought it was the best of Merc's lineup at the time.  Much better than the W140, which I always found to be bloated and bulbous.

Give me an E36 coupe on 18" AMG monoblocks please

That is immoral. You may not do that.

Wimmer loves the 70s so take his critique with a grain of salt

He also doesn't have that Connecticut old money context

I've always hated the looks of the W124. I think it's because it was such a radical change from the W123 (The Last Chrome Benz). The W124 looked so plain and didn't stand out in traffic like a W123 did. And also, because the overwhelming majority of the W124s I grew up around with looked like this.

The W124s Americans grew up with looked like this.

You are right, the American versions did look nicer.

However, in Ghana, ~10-15 or so years ago W124s looked like royalty among the Daewoo Lemans and rusty Datsuns that were the norm. That might skew my view too. I guess my point is context is everything.

I guess it really depends where you grew up and with what types of W124s you grew up with. For me the W123 was such a special car, because even a slow and base model 55/60-horsepower 200D looked special. A base W124 200D had black plastic bumpers, bland plastic hubcaps and looked unspectacular overall. I think this is the main reason why I don't appreciate the W124 from a styling POV.

The only '124 I can somewhat appreciate from a styling POV is the rare 1986-1988 300CE 5.6 AMG "Hammer" - because look at it. Everything just works here and it looks pretty badass.  :ohyeah:

By the way, since you love the C-Class Wagon AMG, I spotted this in the used car section of MB Munich. Hyacintred C300T. Looks amazing!
