Five Of VW's Finest Vintage Coupes Taken To Sachsen Classic Rally

The 2019 Sachsen Classic takes place August 22-24, running from Dresden to Leipzig for a total of 580 km (360 miles) through regions such as Saxon Switzerland, the Ore Mountains and Saxony's castle.



Volkswagen didn't want to miss the opportunity to line up five special coupes: the Karmann Ghia TC 145 (1970), Karmann Ghia Type 14 (1974), SP 2 (1974), Scirocco I SL (1981) and the Passat B2 CL Formula E (1983).



Of the bunch, the SP 2 is arguably the most exotic model (despite the fact that over 11,000 units were built), and was only produced in Brazil. Meanwhile, the Karmann Ghia TC 145 was also intended exclusively for the Brazilian market, whereas the air-cooled Type 14 Coupe stood out with its rare Saturn Yellow Metallic paint.



As for the Scirocco and Passat, the former is a special edition with sporty aluminum rims, front spoiler and foil decors, while the latter was an economical version and even featured a fuel-saving start-stop system – quite innovative for 1983.



When it comes to cars, the Saxony region has a long tradition. It's been home to the VW Group since the 1990s, with sites in Zwickau, Chemnitz, Dresden and Leipzig, so it's no wonder that VW has supported the Sachsen Classic rally since the get-go.

Visitors will also be able to catch a Currywurst van and a unique ice cream van on location, serving up some culinary delights. The two VW T2 food trucks will be present at the finish at Simonsplatz in Leipzig on Saturday.
