Diversity is usually the answer to solving complex issues.  The clear advantage of energy storage over traditional fossil fuels is in this diversity - lithium isn't always the answer.  There are a wide array of battery chemistries and things like thermal and even gravitation storage systems that will be the answer to making renewable energy systems the backbone of electrical grids.

In WA we just pump the water backwards behind the dam. Elevation + water is great. Poor salmon though.
