STUTTGART, Germany ? Mercedes-Benz has developed a new V8 diesel engine for its E420 CDI sedan.

The new engine incorporates common-rail direct injection, piezo injectors, twin turbocharging with variable turbine geometry, electrically controlled exhaust gas recirculation and a water-cooled intercooler.

The engine is made using sand-cast aluminum. In order to minimize noise and vibration, the engine is mounted on a bedplate and incorporates a balancer shaft, which rotates in the opposite direction of the crankshaft. The cylinders are set at a 75-degree angle.

With a performance of 314 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 538 pound-feet of torque at 2,200 rpm, the new 4.0-liter engine generates 20-percent more power and 30-percent more torque than Mercedes' previous 8-cylinder CDI power plant. The car accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 6 seconds, and claims a top speed of 150 mph.

The new engine will debut in the E-Class in fall 2005, and it is expected to be introduced in other Mercedes-Benz models later.

This thing is a monster!  I would still take a 535d.  Its almost as fast, has better handling, and its sequential turbos almost take away the turbo lag from the engine.

I definitely disagree with you there, but hey, styling is subjective.
